Nah, the ease with which the Normans and other folks officially switched religions just proves how little they cared. The Germanic pagan religion was so fundamentally different from Christianity many wouldn't even see them as completely incompatible. It's only later, with the increased pressure for conversion and the perceived threat to their way of life (there's a pattern here - see Wahhabism for another example), that they became more zealous, which ironically turned paganism into something a lot more similar to Christianity (kinda defeating the whole point if you ask me!).
