Is this mod dying?
« on: December 27, 2011, 07:03:54 PM »
Hey fellow players of this mod i think this mod is on its way to the afterlife because the past linebattles have been really small and populated by a few regiments. What do you think and why. Personally i love everything about this mod and i want to know what your guys opinion is and where do you think its going (wild west community)  To  (MM Russia community).

The past line battles have had less than average attendance you say!!??!!? My goodness, what could it be? I fear there are greater powers at work here...

Or it could because its the holiday season, people are in a mess getting to various family functions and transitions between school and home is a mess.

Whenever this specific thread pops up it really makes me sigh :/

I'm not sure about it dying, but something that has concerned me over the last few line battles has been the significant lack of Confederate regiments. At least one Union regiment has been obliged to switch sides every LB and fight for the Confederacy. One line battle in particular it was only my unit, the PRL in attendance for the Rebel side, fighting the 1st Dragoons and some other regiment I can not recall.

I'm not exactly sure of the reason for this, but it's becoming a fairly serious issue. Also the lack of any public play outside of organized events is a factor in the mods attendance. And that, in my opinion is because not enough people even know this mod exists.

I was told, when I first started playing the mod, that there were too many Confed regiments, which was one of the reasons I joined a Union regiment. Strange.

By all that you hold dear on this good earth, I bid you stand, Men of North London!"

thats how it always works, what happens is there are too many on one side, then it flip flops cuz everyone says that, then the other side has too many, and you cant really get a good equal number on each side

If I had soldiers, I'd reopen the 33rd for the Confederacy! :P

It's holiday season...what do you expect? But I do worry about the future of Secession though. If 5arge was serious about banning the leaders of three major Reb regiments from linebattles...

Everyone but the 4(FOUR) reb leaders, you mean.  And by 4 reb leaders, I mean all reb leaders.

But, I won't be beating a dead horse today.  If he had his reasons, so be it, it's done.  Nothing I, nor any of the others will do to change that.  I too fear for the future of this game, particularly because of the fact the Union is so favored in this game.  Intended or not, there are NO game admins leading a Confederate unit.  The fact that the Confederacy also has no marksman might factor in, but I can't say that for certain.  What needs to be done is perhaps a quick re-balancing of the units available to each side, if only to give incentive to play either side rather than people looking at the teams and saying "I'd like to be a marksman, so my only option is Union."

Another thing of note is the rules regarding unit availability in Linebattles.  Now, this may or may not re-open fresh wounds, so if you're prone to call anyone who disagrees with you a "troll," please stop reading now.  As I was saying, maybe...Union shouldn't have Sharpshooters if the Confederacy isn't allowed a proper counter-unit, such as Cavalry or their own sharpshooters?

Again, just a thought.  If you think my ideas are nothing more than a Confederate troll's biased, so be it.  But at least talk about it civilly.

I'm trying to make each side unique, which in the current version is really just sharpshooters vs natives. The troops on both sides have slightly different weapon loadouts, but that's about it.
In future versions things will get much more different between the two, which, while being harder to balance, will end in a much more interesting mod.

See, now this makes sense Azrooh.  What I'm wondering is will the community wait for things to balance out, or will the Internet ADHD take over and have them move on before your plan is realized?  Another factor in the "dying" process(if we can even call it dying,) is the small to none public play.  What is MM doing right that Secession isn't when it comes to replayability?  Is it merely that MM was the first?  Or is the community of pubbers shying away for a reason?  This is something we'll need to investigate before we change anything else.

Explain it to me then.

Yeah, there is definitely something going on with public play. Personally I love playing Secession public. Could it be because of Conquest mode? It's fun during linebattles but when there are only 2-5 people on the server, it's boring. On the large maps especially, people are forced to go cav if they want to win. Then it's just a bunch of flag pulling back and forth and half an hour later someone manages to win. Either removing the larger maps from rotation or changing it to Battle would solve the problem.

I think this is a solid idea.  I think also removing Conquest from events would help, as it's just too chaotic at the moment.  Maybe add some siege scenes?
