Warband too lenient on wandering armies
« on: October 06, 2010, 09:45:26 PM »
In warband, it's quite normal to see a wandering enemy army in your kingdom, and nobody following it. This is kinda highly unrealistic, because if I was a king at that time and there was an army of 200 sarranids running around unchecked, I'd be a little ticked and send some guys after it. What i'm saying is that kingdoms should be less casual about other kingdom's troops running around in their land. Possible balances:
-Allowing a nation's vassals to have full view of enemy vassals in their kingdom (kinda unrealistic)
-Warning a nation's vassals when enemy vassals are near them
-Having increased line of sight in one's own kingdom that they are a vassal in
-Having allied lords/cities send out large patrols to kill the enemy when they are in the cities' land

This would make for more strategic gameplay, I.E. a faction would gradually work it's way to a major city, instead of going in, capping it, and having no support from nearby castles because they didnt cap those previously.

Tell me what you think.

Liked your ideas (except the first and last one) and i propose a different option:

How about the kingdom having two marshals? One marshal for attacking the enemies cities/towns/castles and one to organize the defence of the kingdom. The defence marshalls duty (as for his followers) is to patrol the kingdom looking for wandering enemies troops, as well to breaking enemies sieges/raidings. This defence marshal could be appointed only when war ocours.

As for the cities patrols, i think they are best against bandits, since they problably will lose against a enemie invading lord.

What about some frontier scout or border watch or random villager (village which is locate near the enemy kingdome)who happen to see the enemy troop crossing in to the kingdom? Then the nearest lord and the owner of the fief can receive a warning about the location of the enemy troop.

Also, i don't like the idea of having deserter, bandit and looter roaming around in my kingdom unchecked, so the proposal of having patrol is a good idea, i remember a mod in the old M&B have spawn small patrols to chase down those vermin. And they can send messenger to alert the lords and the king too.
Bracing behind the shield and wait for the enemy to charge, or charging onward on your horse with your lance couched is braver?
