--- Quote from: Gerald of Wales ---...in the war against the Welsh, one of the men of arms was struck by an arrow shot at him by a Welshman. It went right through his thigh, high up, where it was protected inside and outside the leg by his iron cuirasses, and then through the skirt of his leather tunic; next it penetrated that part of the saddle which is called the alva or seat; and finally it lodged in his horse, driving so deep that it killed the animal. (Itinerarium Cambriae, (1191))

Yeah, well, in year 0 AD a guy called jesus was born.
there's no real proof of this incident (the arrow could have been lodged in further when he fell)

OK I agree with you...but you can be accurate with a long bow. I have one, and I've shot it and so I know about what it can do. and it's not to hard to hit a target (I'll admit that it's a 45lb bow) but still...that thing has Power!
Ryuta:
My opinion is Longbow is too hyped.
in this page,
http://www.archeryweb.com/archery/crecy.htm
He estimated that 12000 English (7000 of which was archers) fought 36000 French and caused 5000 - 10000 (the page said cauld be more than 10000, though we don't know the exact number of casualty). I'm not sure what made he decide that English archers shot applox. a half million arrows (that makes about 71 arrows per person. It is about 3 bagfull of arrows per person). If you calcurate, the effective rate of longbow is 1% (with 5000 casualty) to 2% (with 10000 casualty). Because this doesn't include the casualty inflicted by melee, the effectiveness of longbow would go down. This is very crude calculation but you can see my point.
I think Turkish recurve is the best (or at least the best recurve bow). I think the world record done with Turkish recurve is 1.5km or something like that.
Swordmaster:
If I remember it correctly, Seljuks were the best horse archers of their period. Like they know how to shoot from the back. (While on horseback)
ArabArcher35:
Horse archery has always been a dominating factor in the steppes of asia. The parthians were famous for their "parthian shot" (shooting directly behind you while riding). It was not exclusive to the Seljuks in any way.
