WTF has high frame rates to do with your card dieing? If that was true i could shoot Quake 3 and kill 50% of the PCs that i find.
That radeon, if i recall correctly, wasnt a very good card. Pretty hot and bad design. Probably it went off just cuz that. Watch out cuz maybe your PSU is the issue. If it has a fuckd up capacitor then it could go "poof" any moment.
There is almost no way that a software could kill a hardware part UNLESS hardware was faulty. I had a Pentium 4 PC runing with a faulty PSU at 80ºC (90ºC under load) all the day, for half a year, and it didnt die (then i realized that Pentium 4 might rock actually), it rebooted countless times cuz the temps. I still have it actually with a new PSU and still function as expected. And thats 2006 tech.
