| The Coldstream Guards are the oldest regiment of the British Army. Already in 1650 it was set up by Oliver Cromwell to the Supreme George Monck and 23 August 1650 it was established as Monck's Regiment of Foot. With the restoration of the English monarchy in 1660 King Charles II dissolved the whole army, with the exception of Moncks Regiment, which had done excellent service. The regiment received its present name in 1855. The dedication will be reminded of the events of 1660: After the campaign against Scotland in 1650 Moncks regiment had remained in Scotland. After the death of Oliver Cromwell and his son Richard Cromwell Office task Monck slapped himself on the side of the royalists. On 1 January 1660 he crossed with his troops at the site Coldstream River Tweed, which forms at this point, the border between England and Scotland. On 3 February 1660 Moncks regiment reached London, where it supported the restoration of the monarchy. The formal name of the regiment is Her Majesty's Coldstream Regiment of Foot Guards. Her nickname is lilywhites. An ordinary soldier of the Coldstream Guards is called Guardsman, an award that King George V after the First World War introduced. Motto: Nulli Secundus = Unsurpassed. Today the regiment is on duty as a light infantry, used as a guard regiment. It takes part in many important protocol-related events in the UK, for example, at Trooping the Colour and Remembrance Sunday. Current honorary colonel of the regiment is Lieutenant General Sir James Jeffrey Corfield Bucknall, KCB, CBE. |
