Since I will only play as a character from a distant land the beta is practically unplayable if you choose small trader as a profession. I suck at arena combat, but it only gives you very little anyway, and my stats aren't good enough as a trader to fight well. Additionally I can't get a decent horse, because if I put points in riding the only courser to buy is like over a thousand that leaves me with about 1400 left over.
So I can choose to get some merc for a sizable amount or I can spend on goods. If I buy goods and no merc I'll get my goods stolen leaving Kherson. If I buy merc with no goods, I have no where to trade, and with only a handful of merc I get repeatedly accosted by steppe bandits who kill them anyway. If I choose to shell out for a horse I'm a little faster on the map, but again have little money left and all it takes is one encounter and I've been robbed and beat bloody.
So I would please ask that the devs show just a little love to a small trader from a distant land. After all I've sailed two seas to get there, I should be a little more experienced and a little more respected.
Thanks!
P.S. I still couldn't get this to work with Punkt's hires campaign map textures, but I was able to install gutekfiutek's polished landscapes and it's gonna be amazing when I meet some crusaders. Here's a quick shot I took after getting mobbed by looters... (yes looters...)
