Those three would cover most of the population. Here are a couple resources on period slang:
http://www.celticfringe.net/history/vocab.htm
http://www.rugglesrag.com/lookout/OLD-LOOKOUT-DO-NOT-USE/a_19th_century_slang_dictionary.htm

i've started writing some lines, i'll get them up on a file sharing site... uhhhhmm, in the next few days? i'm camping today, so that pretty much rules out today and a fair portion of tomorrow, but it won't take too long to record them, and you don't want to be inundated with them, do you? and i suppose if you like them, i can do more

That's cool, no rush. Have fun camping. Last time I went was a couple months ago, in the mountains, and I about died from the cold so you bundle up now.

--

I am racking my brain trying to think of what I could replace the little picture of a shield with, when I redo the whole UI theme. The shield picture that breaks apart in battle. There won't be a whole lot by way of shields, certainly no unified theme:
Barrel lid
Wagon wheel
Manhole cover
Offhand versions of a few items like a cane

The SW mod just uses a stack of horizontal bars that shortens as the shield weakens. What could represent that in 19th c. terms? Something like this:

?

e: I also read the other night about turn-of-the-century self defence and how men might use their bowler hat, which was very sturdy, as an offhand blocking item against knives. Thusly (and notice the cane used like a sword) :
http://www.savateaustralia.com/images/Apache/Apache13.jpg

What I'd like to do, if I can get the item-function-switching code to work, is make it so if you're wearing a bowler hat you can press a key and take it off and use it like a shield. Anyway that's also another option for the shield graphic, a little hat that gradually gets more beaten up.

Instead of getting any real work done on it I perused Harper's Weekly's online cartoon archive for a few hours and made some banners if any of you chaps want to wear them proudly on the internet.

I think these will be better, thanks. The first set might have been ok, VLC MP is just being bitchy about playing oggs.

VLC cuts off the start and end of any sounds.  If the sounds are short, it doesn't play them at all.  A minor drawback on the second best media player available, after Media Player Classic.

Nice sigs, and the are some good Tammany cartoons (google Tammany cartoon, hehe) for loading screens as well.

The Decembrists are great, but Shankill Butchers in particular is much too recent (and controversial) in subject matter.  in my opinion.  I'd leave that one be - though it's a great song.

Had never heard of Flogging Molly before.   I like them too.

And the expansion of what can be done, said, etc. with random townsfolk is a great idea - surprised that no one has thought of that before.  If someone can get the odd townsperson to give out a quest or two, and also be robbable, we're almost getting towards Morrowind with good combat - the Holy Grail of gaming!

All the music I just sent you is free use.  I also just sent an old steam train/ambient tenement sounds/ambient alley sounds/ambient street sounds/women's voices saying various things.  All the sound effects are things I put together with totally free download/free use stuff, so no problem using any of it.

The women's voices are mine, so again, free use.

Suggested captions:

"I ..drink... your... MILKSHAKE."

I wonder if P T Anderson actually used this image as a deliberate basis for that final showdown, shot-wise, in fact.  Filmmakers do that, or so I read.  It's amazingly similar, in theme and composition, to that shot.

"DRrrrraiiiinage!"

ha! Actually that's some famous boxer, Sullivan I think. But I learned on my second watch of Gangs of New York how they reproduced several photos from the period, most famously the "Bandit's Roost" shot by Riis. It struck me as weird that they'd go to so much trouble for source material that, I assume, most people aren't familiar with (not as recognizeable as Brady Civil War pictures, for instance).

Didn't realize Shankhill Butchers was about a modern gang; or rather, that the Shankhill Butchers IS a modern gang, couldn't say if they meant to refer to that specific gang in the song.

A couple items for the discerning gentleman...

Top: Pocketwatch blunt weapon; Bottom: Ivory fist-head cane, based on a picture of a cane I saw.
