World Of Steam
« on: April 29, 2009, 08:24:37 PM »
There is a new thread for the mod, so check it out, but for now I will leave this one as it is.

Wander has dissapeared so for now I'm back in control again, but this means we really desperately need a coder!

We are now recruiting so for anyone interested PM Me, or if I'm not active, The Stalker Hamster and we will sort something out!

Right, I have now completely changed this post.
This Mod is set in a steampunk world. For those that dont know what Steampunk is, its a modern day genre based on the ideas of what would have happened if we had made huge technological advances during the 18-19th centurary.
The world has five factions:

Captain Nemo and his water race
(click to show/hide)

The Victian Empire
(click to show/hide)

The Reds
(click to show/hide)

The sky pirates
(click to show/hide)

The Rusters.
(click to show/hide)

This is the Ruster Troop tree as it stands:
(click to show/hide)

Here is some concept art from IYIORT named "ruster"

The story so far is the player finds themself in a huge archipelaego buzzing with trade and commerse, governed by a corrupt and merciless empire. They discover the outlaw factions (The reds, The Under water people and the Sky pirates) And proceed to help with one of the two sides, using quests and gaining rank. After a while, the rusters will arrive and start completely annihilating everything and the player will then need to make some big decisions which will affect the outcome. (They will not be able to join the rusters).

The mod will have two, maybe three levels. The first is the normal ground level shown in the normal game, the ground level, with the surface of the sea and the islands, this will have all the normal parties plus sea ships. The second is the sky, with the sky pirate town, some very high mountains and all of the sky ship parties, aswell as entry/docking points for the ground level cities, ideally this level would be the same as the first only higher, shown on the same map. Then the third level, underwater with captain Nemo, the fishes, and submarines.

The mod will feature sky ships and preferable planes aswell, along with a multitude of gadgets and vehicles. (If anyone has something to add that they think would be awesome send me a PM)

The Stalker Hamster has been writing a short story, so check the first four chapters out here, I will post the rest as it arrives:

The Name with the majority was "World Of Steam" which is great because it was my favourite :)
Name for the Mod? will only choose new poll if it is the majority
Steampunk mod  26 (30.6%)Land of the fishpeople  5 (5.9%)The archipelaego  11 (12.9%)new pol with other choices.....  11 (12.9%)World of Steam  32 (37.6%)Total Members Voted: 85

Invaders have been decided:
The invaders poll, new ideas: Btw the metal men are just people with metal workings in them, to try and keep them alive, but who have gone crazy.
The metalmen, rusters, who were created when the Reds tried to find a way of saving people from the killing disease, but have now gone crazy and are converting anyone and everyone, threatening the whole world.  28 (82.4%)New idea?  6 (17.6%)Total Members Voted: 34

The colour of the Victian empire is going to be Dark blue, I know the majority is red, but since we have a "red" faction it would be a bit silly...
What colour would the Victian Empire's uniforms be? I'm not doing black so it can be used later on as a special unit option.
Red  31 (22.6%)Dark Blue  30 (21.9%)Green  13 (9.5%)Grey  13 (9.5%)Yellow  7 (5.1%)Light Blue  7 (5.1%)Brown  12 (8.8%)White  24 (17.5%)Total Members Voted: 137

Ok just an idea, and please only vote if you know what i'm talking about. Before doing this poll check out the trailers for the 2009 film "9"
Should we make the normal "humans" in this game like the main character and his friends from the film "9"  20 (43.5%)should we not  26 (56.5%)Total Members Voted: 46
Looks like its still humans :)

Looks like the team so far is:
Walker = big boss guy(well thats actually me until Wander gets back, which he will, hopefully) :)
The Stalker Hamster(second in command), Smothmoth and Therealdemon = Background story/game plot plus character descriptions
Draconis Topmen = Texturer module maker plus weapons/armourer
we will also be using lVlorts models
Purkeyda = modeler
Me the guy who just helps out XD
PLANET-X concept artwork plus 3d trailer maker

No one's going to make it for you, but on the bright side modding isn't all that hard.

Okay, first off I’m new to this, so if I inadvertently offend someone please tell me and I will do my best to change it.
I’m only posting this idea here because I have not had Mount and Blade for long and have no modding experience of my own, so I’m really hoping someone out there loves my idea and makes it come to life.
I think this will be a very difficult mod to make, and will probably take a long time to do, but if I’m lucky and someone does take a liking to it I will do everything I can to help. My idea is based on a modern day genre called "steampunk", this is a small genre involving mainly novels, short stories and some physical craftsmanship. I think the best comparison game wise is the renowned "Fable II". The idea behind steampunk is what would have happened if we had made our technological advances during the industrial revolution. The result is Victorian style clothing, large use of Airships and almost all machinery and gadgets showing gears of some kind.
My mod will be set in a different Calradia, a Calradia that is still war torn by the same factions, but with some very different weapons and clothing. I think the main difference to the native is the introduction of vehicles, which fall into three different categories: Aircraft, Ground Crawlers and Sea Ships.
Aircraft: This category is made up of Airships, very early planes and balloons.
As you can see, this is what I see the airships resembling, although this is just what I imagine the “airships of war” would actually look like, the smaller vessels would look different.

The planes I think should look something like this, with maybe two or more seats with limited firing power, mainly a small cannon and bombs I was thinking.

Ground Crawlers: This would be made up of motorized caravans, very early tanks and maybe some mechanical walkers of some kind.
I’m posting these images so you can get a feel for what I mean when I talk about the different types of vehicle, obviously the tank is from world war one, the walker concept art and the motorized wagon early American history, but if we can combine these elements into the game, it could be fantastic.

The sea ships will be early steam ships, and the old sail ships that were frequent around the 17-18th century.
There are a few things I would like to say about the vehicles, which involves other aspects of the game as well, so I will try and organize it into something vaguely readable but if not then please accept my apologies. Firstly, I want the airships to be something you are very proud of, like your own castle, I want it to really feel like home and I think the best way of achieving this is to make them as customizable as possible. This can include placing items in your different rooms, adding more components on, including more rooms, better engines, some more weapons, paintings, furniture etc (this would also be available for your castle and other vehicles and is only limited by the space you have). Now, I think this is going to make most of the real modders who are reading this choke, but I think the vehicles should be made of destructible parts, so if you get hit on the stern, a health bar doesn’t slowly diminish until you blow up, but the damage is shown on your ship, maybe knocking out some vital steering mechanism or just producing a jagged hole, its details like that I’ve noticed distinguish the amazing game from the nondescript. Instead of recruiting the odd villager, I think the major towns and cities should have an option where all the people who are seeking employment sign up, this will be easier for the player to produce an army, and make for a more seamless experience. Not only will all the volunteers be in the same place, but they will be grouped. For the vehicles, a some new types of unit should be developed, mechanics to keep the vehicle running, gunners to fire the cannons (both on and off vehicles), Pilots for flying/driving and regular crewmen for the everyday tasks. When on a vehicle, your regular army troops will make up the “marines” who will be used to board/protect during combat. The vehicles will have population caps, but you will be able to have more than one in your fleet/army. You can choose to stay to the ground, stick to the air, or mix both together.
For the aircraft, I think there should be a separate option on the map, which lets you enter and walk about your ship, look out at your fleet, and fly around the world. To make this practical, all you would be able to see below you would be a cloud layer of some sort, and any airship on the world will be in that same large cloud expanse, where you go in the sky would somehow have to be read on the actual map. All you would see are maybe the odd landmark jutting up. I think the most important part to mention here is that there wouldn’t be any battle loading screen, if another ship is near your fight they can just join in or move off, to make a more realistic experience. For boarding other ships, you will have a grapnel and “wings”, the grapnel will be able to attach anywhere, and the wings will act as a sort of glider/parachute if you miss the other ship, or can be used to glide over to the enemy’s decks. I want the boarding action to be bloody and seamless, so no loading screens when you go through a door, and doors, like the rest of the ship, should be destructible.
As far as weapons and armor go, I think we should keep most of the heavier and lighter types from native, but since this game is more about light clothing, muskets and pistols with a melee involving mainly swords and bayonets I think it would be best to design a lot of Victorian style clothing which can be bought more for look than anything else. I would also be good if, when recruiting men, you had a set uniform which you would then pay for as well. I think I have mentioned it before, but the new weapons in this game are muskets, canon and pistols. I think all three have already been developed so should not be too hard to make, although they should be as realistic as possible in game, with maybe slightly faster reload rates. Note. All canon will have to have a crew of some sort to fire it, either on or off a vehicle, and all guns reload time will depend on the experience the unit has. I think the game should encompass some sort of explosives as well, like the early explosive shells, French glass grenades and quicklime.
What I think is the most important part of the game would be to not only make it for the fighting, but also for those traders out there as well, and so I think trading vehicles will play a huge role in this. To help that along, regions should be able to be bought, not only taken by conquest, though only if the Lord is experiencing financial problems. I think another faction “pirates” should be added, who will actively try to ambush traders and should make it a bit more fun trying to get your goods to another city safely.
The land battles will be the same, but with the added use of gunpowder and vehicles.

That’s all I can remember just now but I will keep adding bits when I think of them and when people get back to me. Hope it wasn’t too boring and that someone will go away and have a think about it, my email address is bitemeagain@hotmail.co.uk and I ask that you only email me if you are interested in my idea, or I will remove it.
Thanks for reading and have a good day 

Well, Fable 2 isn't steampunk and not even steampunk'ish so that's a pretty bad example.
Fable 1 was a fantasy tale set in fictive version of medieval england, Fable 2 is a fantasy tale set in fictive version of victorian england.
What this means is that there is no steampunk technology present in Fable 2, not really even any steam.

Also you can pretty much forget the aircraft part and most of the part you were talking about the naval battles.
As there are no naval battles in the vanilla M&B and there are naval battles in some mods, but those are not very well implemented.

He isn't pessimistic, he just knows how things are on this forum better than you, it seems. If you are not a good modder yourself, no one will won't to join your team, and make the mod while all you do is give ideas. As for someone showing you how, there are a lot of good tutorials on modding in the Forge, so you better head over there instead of being here...

Your name insults me enough.

Ok, but if you want drivable vehicles that would be hard unless you want them horse-size.
You can pretty much forget about gunners.
Aircraft is completely impossible.
Even if the airships were castles it'd be hard to do if not impossible.
It's an okay idea but not practicalat allfor M&B.
