Messed up save files? (Factions and Relations)
« on: February 20, 2009, 02:52:49 AM »
I just went on Mount and Blade earlier, and everything seemed fine. I then went to a lord and noticed that the relation was 487, which quite obviously isn't correct. I checked with a few other lords, some had normal relations, some were messed up  to the same degree. When I talked to King Harlaus, the relation was fine, but there was the vassalage option. I was already a lord of Swadia, and I still owned all my castles and villages.
Any idea what happened? I play on Native with no mods and I haven't ever tried to mess with the save files.

I was going to post something very similar.

I recently started a new game, so there wasn't much to mess up. I didn't have anything much worse than -3 with any character, and nothing over 5 for anyone bar one lord I buttered up to do a 'stop the war' guildmaster quest.

Now, after loading a savegame, a whole bunch of Lords are 'devoted' to me.

Faction relations are still zero, they had never changed.

I've no idea what's causing this - I only run graphical (texture additions) mods.

Edit: I'm playing so I can save anytime. I've loaded up all my old saves with the same character, and a similar thing has happened.

Loaded up a savegame of one I retired, and the same again. Though this time I get an error message when I go to the relations report on the reports page:

Code: [Select]
SCRIPT ERROR ON OPCODE 2335: Invalid Faction ID: 1400; Line No: 72:
At Game Menu menu_character_report

In all savegames, it looks like it's the same list of Lords who have jumped in relations (I haven't written them down to be sure, but I've recognised some names across the saves) - and they're randomly spread across all factions.

Edit v2.0: I assume this is an update issue (I hadn't noticed steam updating) as per http://forums.taleworlds.net/index.php/topic,45208.0.html and savegame compatability.
I'm running it from Steam (should have said before) which is now distributing the 1.011 patch, causing this issue. I'm having a hunt for how to rollback game updates on steam, but am having no luck. Any ideas would be appreciated?

When I got home this evening my brother warned me that Steam updated something in the game and it lost him his loyalty to the Nords and he was receiving script errors.

For me it did the same thing with my faction. Plus I was no longer the marshal, and my rep with lords didn't even make sense. Something went completely wrong with whatever update this was. In any event, it's not backwards compatible with old savegames.

I tried running a system restore. Of course, that did squat. I'm not about to start the game over because of some unannounced and obviously untested update through Steam. So as much as I love this game I'm hoping this issue gets fixed shortly.

The compatibility problem has been known about forever; there was a reason that the Steam version was not previously changed to 1.011 before. I don't know why it was changed now. If you want to use a compatible version, download and use the M&B Demo -- it will be activated from your install of M&B and will be the 1.010 version that is compatible with your old saves.

Thank you. I just had that idea last night an hour or so after I made that post so I downloaded all 380 MB of 1.010 and guess what, it worked.

I don't like the idea that Steam can just change stuff on our computers without telling us. If it had told us, we would have figured out this problem instantly. I'll be pissed if this hurts the reputation of TaleWorlds. All Steam woulda had to do is read the "Latest release of M&B" thread above (which specifically says not to upgrade the Steam version to 1.011 because the savegames are incompatible) to know that was a bad idea. Now fans lose their savegames and might not buy anything else by TaleWorlds or Paradox because of what they think is sloppy programming.

Ah well, hope for the best. Thanks again!

You can turn off automatic updates. In the games list, right click on any game and go to Properties. On the Updates tab, select "Do not automatically update this game".

Problem is that most people don't assume something like this will happen and preemptively disable automatic updates. :|

Hi,  I'm running into this same issue.  But I can't figure out where to download the Mount and Blade demo from - the only versions on the downloads page are 1.011 and 1.003.

Also, I am afraid I saved my game under version 1.011 - is it a lost cause?

Thanks.

I don't know if it's a lost cause or not: you may want to try viashimo's solution here to test (it will allow you to open the modified saves in 1.010). It may still be salvageable.

You can download the M&B Demo off Steam here.

//EDIT: After some testing, I found that faction relations returned to normal in my test savegame; however, my honour rating increased to 81 from 32 for reasons unknown. I had only tested one lord's behaviour, unfortunately, before realizing that my honour rating may have increased his opinion of me from 10 to 26. I'll have to go back and re-check with a dishonourable lord.

//EDIT 2: Yep, it seems that was the case. If I could find a way to fix the honour rating, lord relations should be back to normal as far as I can see.

//EDIT 3: YMMV, but from my testing, the fixing the honour rating problem should put everything back in working order.

Some quick tests indicated that everything is normal enough for me to continue with the game, at least!  Thanks to Gamemako and viashimo!

Are the developers aware of the issue? I'd love to be able to launch the real game again, instead of needing to remember to launch the demo.

I am in the same boat, my faction is now grey, the pretender to the throne is still in my party, the rebel faction still owns some castles but I cannot hire new lords.

Did you fix the savegames by hexing them and using version 1.010 again?

Also, does one have to uninstall the Mount and Blade full game in order to install the demo?

Thank you so much for the help all who found this solution.  Thus far it seems to have corrected my issues.  I do wish I had caught the issue before I overwrote all my 1010 save game files, but I am glad that at least from this point forward it should work.  There's no hope of translating the 1010 savegames for use with 1011 (I have issues with not being fully "up to date" it's an issue I have)

Are we to assume that this is THE solution for this and anyone suffering from this needs to follow this Hex Editiing proceedure?  If so, I guess I/we should try to spread the word as much as possible.  I can only imagine there's a good amount of recent purchasers via Steam who are "steamed".  I mean what a debacle.  Not that it matters, but it would be interesting to find out how this happened/why, but I digress.

Love this game - got it on Steam and proceeded to play it for 46+ my first week.  After several weeks of this boom this "update".  Still, I love this game far too much for my own good so I shant be complaining.

For now, this is the only solution anyone has. Unless Armagan comes out with a compatibility patch for us, this will be the way it stays. I am currently looking into finding a pattern for the hex changes which may allow someone to code a batch converter. We'll see if anything comes of it.
