Ok. I've figured out the problem with dusk/dawn skydome. Size of skydome object actually does make a huge difference. Also - with bigger skydome sphere there can be applied bigger skybox texture (high res). I have doubts though with using bigger texture because frame rate might drop. With bigger dome but without polycount increase there's no performance drop whatsoever.

Only thing is to find any indication for global map skybox. I'm afraid it might be hardcoded... :(

BTW: How's GE 3 going Zaro? Is there a hope to have it released any time soon?

Stagnant at the moment, but it's a bit hard to be productive during the drinking and eating season (well it's all year long, but more so now). First week of '09 should be productive unless I'm still addicted to EU3 (I'm creating a graphical pack for that too ). Personally, I don't get bored of graphical stuff compared to coding (probably because we see visual results much more quickly) so there's no risk of what is happening to my realism mod.

I'm sure it will for quite a few, but many can still run it. No matter what I do for skies, I'll have hi-res and lo-res versions. I'm looking forward to seeing what you can do after messing around with it some more :).

You're creating a graphical pack for EU3? Holy ****, where can I get info on that? I'm thinking on buying it these days, but now you've made me certain.

Nard, we even chatted in IRC about MnB.

You can use textures with higher resolution on the same skydomes, too.

Like Zaro said, hi-res and lo-res versions really help.

Anyway, I make myself useful now and start working on these outer terrain meshes+textures.

I think it looks great when youre in a battle or visiting a town, it does do what you said and give a sense of "non-ending" map. However the global map skybox does make it seem a little strange. Is there no way to find the code that tell the global map to load a certain skybox? Im sure youve tried that already though.

Yes. I had. And I can't find any reference in the files about map using certain skybox. For now I'm trying to create more "universal" landscape with patch of fog and very distant mountains to appear where the sea is on global map. That should do the trick hopefully. We'll see how it works.

Another issue is that it seems I'm too dumb to understand how translate flags into numbers in skyboxes.txt. Or how to calculate floats for the colour of my choice. Or how to implement the fog density and colour for the scenes (changes in said txt file aren't causing any visual difference). I'm not a programmer and I don't know about Python that much unfortunately...

To be honest, I'd leave distant mountains etc. to the outer terrain mesh. Let the skydome be a skydome and the outer terrain outer terrain :)

By the way, I'm sorry to say so but I haven't worked on it. My 5.1 system came today and I had to enjoy it :P

Sure. The question is... how far you can expand outer terrain to create proper distance illusion? 10 units? 100? 1000? How to make that distant lands will be covered with fog? Or clouds? Or be a bit blurry? And *if* you can achieve such an amazing effect - what's going to be an impact on game performance? And why no one had done it before if it's such a plain and easy method to improve visual side of the game?

No worries - either myself or anyone here is putting any pressure on you. I'm not an impatient person by any means. take your time...

P.S. You've said about overlapping skydomes and shading to create moving clouds effect - could you elaborate on that? How to assign two or more skydome meshes to one skybox? I couldn't find any mention about it on the forums. Could you elaborate more on that?

I like this, except for the dusk/dawn one.  Personally, I'd always preferred the vanilla one.

I have this fixed and will release fix soon. The problem was the size of sunrise skydome mesh in vanilla skyboxes.brf - it was a lot smaller than the rest.

[Off topic mode on] Are you and Solecist same guys who were making Redux for S.T.A.L.K.E.R.? Or is it just a coincidence? ;) [off topic mode off]

Not a coincidence.  :P  We've moved away from it and are now mostly just doing whatever, but yes we are.

Damn, I knew it. :D I got fed up with S.T.A.L.K.E.R. an GSC forum some time ago as well. And CS was a huge disappointment for me. Not to mention some serious RL problems which struck me and stopped me from modding for SHoC. Nice to meet some familiar ppl here though. :)

I won't reveal my real name if you excuse, just in case that Kany's Hungarian curse would hunt me down...  I hope there's not such a similar character around here? ;)

Ever thought about making Realism Enhancement for M&B? (not as flexible engine, I know - but heree are some tools at least)..

Ron Losey over on MBX forums handles realism mods like that mostly.  Once he figures out the current mod version, you should be seeing alot of mods from MBX, since he contributes to quite a few of them.
