how to station troops in villages

i've found a way to put troops in villages, they wont fight on their own, but if you arrive, you'll get whatever troop you dump in your village and not farmers, this in effect gives you the choice to station a garrison

open menus.txt and search this:

change the red 11 to 12

you can put your own troops in vilages in case of attack so you get decent backup, famers and peasant women spawn every two days or so, so you can gather emergency levies as well from this if you're desperately in need of troops, i'd also advise you to arrange the troops so the best troops are at the top of the list, therefore the ones that spawn with you at the start of battle.

Now now. That's pretty interesting. So, if your village is being raided and you rush to it's defense, those troops you stationed will replace Farmer Bob and Pete the Shepherd in battle?

But Farmer Bob had his Special ability to summon the vampire cows!!!

other than defending it themselves, anything else different from normal troop stations?

they dont defend it themselves, you still need to show up, but when you do, you get proper backup (if you had stationed troops there), also, about 50 farmers can be taken out at once as levies, not great, but for emergencies

tommylaw, have you thought about how this would affect bandit invasions? I mean, what will your garrisoned elite troops be doing while the bandits taking over the control of your village?

As he said, it won't have any effect except the times you are there to fight with them. So no change to the frequency bandits show up, or the time it takes an enemy lord to loot the place, but if you turn up to fight either of the above off, they will appear by your side.

the same reason why i'm resting at a village, pay wage screen appears, and whne i go back into the village, bandits have snuck in while i was looking the other way.

its not perfect

Wow, that is insanely helpful to those of us who want to collect a hundred or so Nord Husclars before they storm their first city without having to go through castle first (so that we can make sure we actually get the city). Also, we will have backup ready to replace the assault losses with a full-fledged garrison (containing loads of archers) when AI punitive army comes knocking.

happy to be of service

It seems that villages come pre-garrisoned with farmers and peasant women. What happens if I take them all and empty the village garrison? Does that mean I'll get no reinforcements against bandits?

Using this tweak and dumping prisoners into the village dungeons so that i can persuade them to my side later.  Looking ahead, I have some questions about the farmer replenishments.
- Do I only get a new band of farmers when the village is empty, or just if there are no farmers?  If I take them all out and train them up to watchmen, then put them back into the town, will 50 new farmers appear?
- If I reach the limit on troop types in garrison (32 or 64 forget which) and none of them are farmers, what happens when the next round of farmers spawns?  No farmers, one of my troop lines disappears, or CTD?

I took out the entire village garrison to train (57 farmers + 5 peasant women). The next day, 17 new farmers appeared in the village garrison. After 6 days, the village garrison replenished again and there were 47 farmers + 4 peasant women in the garrison.

Good question, but I haven't tried it out yet. You probably won't get more farmers as replenishment.

It seems from my play experience so far that no new farmers spawn unless the village is empty.  Which is less of a big deal than I expected it to be, as having a place to stash prisoners until I convert them and troops as I level them up has made a huge difference in the number and quality of troops I can amass before taking a center.  It doesn't hurt that you don't pay salaries for troops in the village garrison.  Dashbigha is my only holding and I'm supporting an army of 450 mid to high level Khergits and Nords for ~300 a week until I can get my party size up enough to threaten Veluca.
