Both of these are pretty cheap, and have good service:

Also go to http://forums.armourarchive.org/phpBB2/. They can help.

http://www.sca.org/

It's an organization centered around the Middle Ages, it includes combat and in one year I can participate in the heavy combat, that's enough time to earn the money for all my armor.

Hey Brasidus or someone who knows -- should I bother joining the SCA? I mean, it sounds cool enough, but the stuff like no leg hits kind of bothers me.
Could be fun.  I would have enjoyed it had I bothered to go more and not been a bit of an egotistical wanker with a host of completely unrelated emotional issues at the time.  It entirely depends on the group you're with.  Just remember that its a sport like any other and you'll probably have a blast.

Low (they'd need to run you through their safety rules and training, after all.  It is a sport)

Yeah, that's what I meant.
Well, the first day I showed up they asked me what sort of experience I had, threw me a set of loaner armor and asked me if I'd do some polearm sparring with them, and did.  So... *shrug*  it can't hurt.

Our local group doesn't seem the smartest. Therefore, I think it may take a little work for you to get into fighting with them. Not to mention, of course, the minimum age being eighteen. I don't think our group has any lower-level accommodations. So you'd still have to wait a year.

That being said, if you like the middle ages for any reason other than fighting, the SCA is generally a great idea, if you don't mind hanging out with people twice or thrice your age (in our group at least).

u will not find a 100% sca armourer etc. each kingdom, barony etc have different rules and regs. its up to you and your groups marshal to determine which pieces from what armoury are good enough to pass or that you feel safe with.  one armourers 16 guage might be good enough per the sca rules but not good enough for that kingdoms min 14g helms etc so you have to read up on your areas rules and regs etc. then ask the locals about what armourers they buy from and who they suggest for next times buying. there might even be a local near you that can armour you up for cheaper and get the right sizes etc.

as to mail in the sca yes it is acceptable. mail has been worn from Celts right up till the 16thc so i think it covers "the middle ages"  you just have to still wear the acceptable kidney protection under it as well as knees, throat and elbows if your hauberk is long and long sleeved  its armour for armours sake but not good enough to cover those area per the games rules and regs

hey guys i have been a member of SCA lochac for 14 years, i make most of my own kit, its militia grade but is tough, if you want to know how to make kit or any questions about sca let me know, if i dont know i will know people who do.

as for sca rules its all on the websites. that includes armor and weapon regs as well.

You can't really average it out like that I fear.
I fought SCA from 84 to 2002.

What kind of kit are we talking about?
How protected do you want to be?
How mobile do you want to be?
What time period?
What culture?
What is your budget?
How accurate do you want to be?
Is being accurate more, or less important than looking how you want?
Is being able to fight well in it more important than historicity?

Ect.

I've fought in 14th, 15th, 16th c European kit, 1 c Roman, and 7th c Irish ect.
You can spend as little as $60.00 depending upon the above questions and thew rescources available to you through the local SCA chapter.

Hey anglomanii, how much does the average full heavy combat kit for the SCA cost?

yeah its very dependent on what you want, as always i can be done cheaply, but it all depends on what you need. i have made a passable kit of heavy (bare minimum) for less then $150 Australian. but it was not to good looking and only covered the vitals
