Yeah those are awesome and I have no idea what SCA is, don't suppose you know any for battle ready weapons. *raises brows*

http://www.sca.org/

It's an organization centered around the Middle Ages, it includes combat and in one year I can participate in the heavy combat, that's enough time to earn the money for all my armor.

Hey Brasidus or someone who knows -- should I bother joining the SCA? I mean, it sounds cool enough, but the stuff like no leg hits kind of bothers me.
Could be fun.  I would have enjoyed it had I bothered to go more and not been a bit of an egotistical wanker with a host of completely unrelated emotional issues at the time.  It entirely depends on the group you're with.  Just remember that its a sport like any other and you'll probably have a blast.

Low (they'd need to run you through their safety rules and training, after all.  It is a sport) and almost 100%.  Most groups have loaner gear on hand purely to avoid discouraging members.

Yeah, that's what I meant.
Well, the first day I showed up they asked me what sort of experience I had, threw me a set of loaner armor and asked me if I'd do some polearm sparring with them, and did.  So... *shrug*  it can't hurt.

Our local group doesn't seem the smartest. Therefore, I think it may take a little work for you to get into fighting with them. Not to mention, of course, the minimum age being eighteen. I don't think our group has any lower-level accommodations. So you'd still have to wait a year.

That being said, if you like the middle ages for any reason other than fighting, the SCA is generally a great idea, if you don't mind hanging out with people twice or thrice your age (in our group at least).

Is there no mail armour allowed by SCA? Is everything oriented to the later Middle-Ages?

u will not find a 100% sca armourer etc. each kingdom, barony etc have different rules and regs. its up to you and your groups marshal to determine which pieces from what armoury are good enough to pass or that you feel safe with.  one armourers 16 guage might be good enough per the sca rules but not good enough for that kingdoms min 14g helms etc so you have to read up on your areas rules and regs etc. then ask the locals about what armourers they buy from and who they suggest for next times buying. there might even be a local near you that can armour you up for cheaper and get the right sizes etc.

as to mail in the sca yes it is acceptable. mail has been worn from Celts right up till the 16thc so i think it covers "the middle ages"  you just have to still wear the acceptable kidney protection under it as well as knees, throat and elbows if your hauberk is long and long sleeved :) its armour for armours sake but not good enough to cover those area per the games rules and regs
