The purpose of lod's

They're simpler versions of each mesh that appear when they're a certain distance from the camera. They render fewer polygons of stuff you can't even see, make distant objects look less messy, and allow more stuff in a scene without lag.

You'll usually only need lod2 and lod4 though.
