Brytenwalda troop balance fix

Users who are viewing this thread

I decided to redo everything from scratch and just do the most minor changes possible, because it felt like the game was too different than before. So here you go!

Change log:
-removed stones and slings, because they are useless and units time is better spent fighting.
-I removed spears on all units that wield a shield, because let's face it, they are useless and can't fight.
-units with two handed spears and cavalry were untouched.
-removed bows on bandits, because it makes fighting them more tedious than fun.
-put clubs on low tier slavers
-nerfed axes and some 2handed weaponry because they were ridiculous, especially on tier 1 and tier 2 units.
-buffed scions/daggers/pointy objects with a little more swing and more stab, still weaker than axes, but your units having axes or not is no longer a win condition.

Copy paste these two over your original files

This took me all day to get it perfect, so be grateful.

-put clubs on slavers, because realistically how are they going to take prisoners if they murder them all.
-balanced lower tier: no more one handed axe zerglings spam instead of making a real army.
-No more ****ty cloth shirts on high tier units.
-buffed medium and higher tier mercenary units slightly
There are still strategic differences between factions, but the saxons aren't roflstomping with their decked out hearthweru seaxes as much now

I agree that spears seem pretty weak but removing them for units having shields seems to really deviate from what we know about that period in history.  Most troops probably used both shields and spears.  Only the well-to-do troops and the lord's retainers would have been able to afford good swords and good mail.

I wonder if it wouldn't be better to just increase the spear damage values to make them a bit more deadly.

Don't you think they tried that? The way the game is designed, spears and shields don't work together.
Sorry if it's not historical, but watching 20 units fighting for 5 minutes unable to kill each other because they have spears and shields takes away from the whole experience.

I don't know what changes to spears modders have tested.  I am just offering an opinion- didn't mean to offend.  Perhaps the skills of the spearmen need to be upped a bit to make them reasonably deadly.
I do appreciate your work on this.  Anything to make Brytenwalda better is a good thing!
