Pro-tip: Don't attack any faction parties unless you can win against any of them.

Also, get out of Sardineland, and kill more looters. Stop recruiting so many guys, as they slow down your movement, and decrease the amount of loot you get.
Solo small groups of bandits until around level ten. Recruit companions and improve your equipment.
Looters and Mountain bandits are probably the best you can manage in the beginning, try not to fight more than ten at once.

If a party is aggressive and stronger than you, abandon as many troops as is necessary to outrun them.

Mountain Bandits? I don't know, they can throw stuff really hard...

Best is to become... GOD OF THE ARENA!!!

And then use the money you win on melee fights and tournaments to hire your first mercenary cavalry, send them to kick some *** and use the money from the loot to upgrade your gear.
