Mercenary upgrades?

I started a new game with lance recruitment option and now I'm not so sure my hired troops 'mercenaries' advance in anyway. By the end of the day I get exp from training but it's so little and it says I got all of it, I also participate in battles but so far I am level 7 and didn't have a chance to upgrade any of my troops.

Please help.

Just won a battle, shared around 1300 exp with my party and yet my Scandinavian mercenary range didn't even get a single exp point. :/

Most of mercenary units can't be upgraded (including Scandinavians you've mentioned). You can check if there is a button for upgrade after selecting specific unit in Party window. If there's none, no advance is possible.

That is the disadvantage of mercenary troops - there are better equipped and more effective compared to levies and commoners (lowest available) but if you persist with these lower troops over time they get better and outshine the mercenaries.  I tend only to use mercenaries when I need to rapidly increase troop numbers in a castle - I prefer to use non-mercenaries and develop them with a trainer (but that is a personal preference).

Mercenaries are more effective than most troops, they have really good proficiencies and good ironflesh and power strike, but their armor is usaully bad, but using mercenary only army is more effective than most lord armies.

But its fun to see your troops toughen up over a few battles and with a good trainer  :grin:.  I also like to use recruits, toughen them up and put them into garrisons and take out more recruits because I am a great believer in using quality over quantity.  It also makes the game feel more realistic also.

Of course it is more realistic, troops toughen up each battle. Although the trainer skill is kind of unrealistic.

You can work out which flag a troop has by starting from the one with the smallest value and going from there.

Didn't help. Thx for trying tho.

tf_male          = 0
tf_female        = 1
tf_undead        = 2
tf_hero              = 0x00000010 (= 16)
tf_inactive          = 0x00000020 (= 32)
tf_unkillable        = 0x00000040 (= 64)
tf_allways_fall_dead = 0x00000080 (= 12:cool:
tf_no_capture_alive  = 0x00000100 (= 256)
tf_mounted          = 0x00000400 (= 1024) #Troop's movement speed on map is determined by riding skill.
tf_is_merchant      = 0x00001000 (= 4096) #When set, troop does not equip stuff he owns
Then check whether the flag no can be divided into them, from the gender value to the largest. If it's divisible by the flag value while it's not the case with the next, subtract it from the total flag no. Rinse and repeat. At the end, you'll find out if tf_mounted is there.

Troop types do influence map speed - my understanding is that more horse the- more speed and when I have experimented, I find this to be true.  Please also bear in mind that morale impacts on map speed.

That said - there are more experienced players than me.

Il-Khanate has mongol units (all cav) from the hordes but their provinces have Turkish soldiers (2 holdings have Armenian troops) which focus on being well armored and usually ranged.

Mamluks are Arabs. Lots of archers and heavy light and ranged cav. Also if you have the lance system and join them you can hire actual Mamluks which are epic cavalry mercenaries.

Maranids very few heavy units but really good light cav, archers, and infantry. North Africans
