Getting new PC. Thoughts

Users who are viewing this thread

So much information! Still torn between saving longer and getting a pre-build with room to upgrade or custom within the next month or so.
Every time I see the price of custom I go "Yep that's what I am going for" But then I see the simple "buy" button on a sites with pre-build ones which are only a bit more pricey and I think "Hmm, its so easy"

But...but it has a 2 day delivery time.
Found this while looking at parts
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=FS-002-OG
Only really had a look since its got the GTX 760 and the i5-46070k, all talked about on here I think. I think I am going to have to pick whether or not to go for a custom or pre-build some time soon since then I ahve something to aim for.

I would probably switch the case to the silverstone raven they have listed if you can afford that. That is all just personal preference mostly though since most cases have fairly decent cooling.

AMD Radeon R9 270X or Nvidia GeForce GTX 760? Build is the same as the link before but the Graphics Card is a little cheaper.

http://gpuboss.com/gpus/Radeon-R9-270X-vs-GeForce-GTX-760

760 so says this review. It's basically a toss up though so just go for whatever is cheaper I would say.

Looks good. If you ever want to make your CPU faster all you would need then is a better CPU cooler (can you upgrade that for a little bit on the options?).

You should also see if the CPU can actually be 'downgraded' to an 2500k

Just putting the final touches(So to speak) on the build.  Sadly PCS doesn't offer the 2500k or I am being stupid and can't find it.
Was wondering if I could use 4GB rather 8GB since it saves quite a bit of money. But if I am giving up performance etc then I will stick with 8GB.  Also if any of you know a good case(The other one was nice but boosted the price again) from PCS selection that would be good since I  am only of £150 from getting the new build

Windows uses about 1GB under ideal conditions, and games take up 2.5GB max usually. Doesn't leave enough leftover, so Windows starts to use the slow page file thus slowing everything down a lot.

Much better with >4GB.

Thanks for all the help guys. I have made up my mind and am going for the slightly more pricey one.(Would quote but I removed it when trying to  ) Help me alot and hopefully I can get the PC by the end of Summer.

Didn't want to make another thread so thought I would just post on here again.

Got the money but still conflicted between making my PC or ordering my custom one(Will take longer)

Almost purely for games such as Arma3/Dayz and TW.  Would be good to know which one would work better.  And not sure about the PC Part Picker power supply since if that blows and shorts the whole computer I will be more pissed then I was when watching the GoT Red Wedding scene.  I watched a good few vids and now know the basics of how to build the computer but still unsure and don't want to mess things up.

EDIT: Would you say this is a solid build guide?
Never seen the thermal paste bit before. :S

Thermal paste is usually pretty applied on after market coolers and stock coolers alike. Generally a good thing to have in case you need to remove the cpu but not needed really.

I would go with the one you have to build. It really isn't all that hard and now if something is wrong you at least know how to remove a component.

True. Just terrified of messing it up some how. Static is my main fear, but what is life without risk.(A computer free one for me  )
How would they match up performance wise? Since I am guess the same but still don't know a lot about specs yet.

Static isn't going to be an issue unless you try to gather as much as you can while building.

The custom build you have up there is actually going to be weaker than the prebuilt due to IPC differences between i5-2xxx and 4xxx. It could be offset by overclocking the 2xxx, but that comes with its own issues and risks.

Hm, how about this? Kinda like the idea of building one since It wil be good fun and quick.(Hopefully)

That CPU cooler is around the same price and it's a water cooler.

Don't know if you'd even need one but I have a Corsair Hydro H110 and it was very simple to install and it's always a plus I suppose.

I'm sure you'd be fine with a regular fan cooler and don't wish to confuse you but the hydro series is as simple as it gets.

E: yes it fits should fit the 1150 socket processor you picked

You have that backwards, the thermals on the 2500k are much better. Also I think it's Ihs not IPC. Clock for clock the new generation is better because of the die shrink but they used fairly average thermal paste on the ihs. On Sandy (2500k) the ihs is soldered to the chip so you can't actually improve that, with ivy and haswell you can remove the ihs and put better paste on for better temps.

Edit : okay ips is a thing and I kind of mentioned it earlier by saying clock for clock the new cpus are better. Without overclocking this means they would be a better choice basically. Hopefully the Devils canyon chips are as good as 2500ks for heat, then I can finally upgrade.
