"A ſilent Þrone" Mod
« on: November 11, 2007, 04:26:11 AM »
Quote
It has бeen many years ſince þe laſt Kiŋ of Ƶendar was бrutally ſlain бy þe бlack kniȝt Aðælƿ, & all is not riȝt in þe land.  Bandits & renegades roam þe foreſts of þe norð, plaguiŋ þe honeſt people of þe Foreſt Kiŋdom, & commitiŋ atrocities acroſs þe oðer realms in þe name of þe Good Kiŋ Þelin.  Kiŋ Pallos of þe Hill Kiŋdom & Kiŋ Borgar of þe Mountain Kiŋdom have riſen againſt þe Foreſt Kiŋdom, weary of þe numerȣs attacks on þeir people бy þe outlawed бrigands, & as a reſult þe tenuȣs peace has бeen ʃattered.  Þis has cauʃed þe people of þe land to riʃe againʃt þe Kiŋs & бand togeðer to fiȝt for what þey бelieve to бe þeir riȝt to freedom.

Amidſt þis chaos & diſruption, a numбer of Noбlemen have joined þeir Kiŋs for þe good of þeir people.  Originally бent on deſtroyiŋ only бandits þat were fooliʃ enȣȝ to croſs þeir pað, þeſe kniȝts now fiȝt all who treſpaſs on þeir Kiŋs territory, cauſing many ſkirmiʃes бetƿ þe different peoples of þe land.

Þe Mountain Men, under Borgar, & the Hillsmen, under Pallos, ſtill keep a rudimentary truce, declaring þat þe two ſides ʃȣld remain apart from each oðer, exceptiŋ duriŋ times of trade, and þat þere was to бe no conflict.  Þe Foreſt Kiŋ has retreated into his home & is not giviŋ an audience to any emiſsaries sent бy þe oðer two Kiŋs, &, as a reſult, war has ſparked бetƿ þe aforementioned Kiŋdoms.

In þis war-torn land, rumȣrs aбound of þe return of þ Dreadkniȝt Aðælƿ from whichever land he journeyed to having killed þe laſt Kiŋ of Ƶendar - ſome even ſay he comes to claim his divine riȝt to þe þrone.  However, for now, þe þrone is ſilent.

I doubt many of you will be able to read that - don't worry, it's just backstory, and if you can, good job ;)  I've probably gone wrong everywhere, but whatever.  It's 3 AM here.
Short key for those who can’t read various old -> modern English letters: ſ = s; Þ = þ = th; ŋ = ng; ȝ = gh; ð = th; ƿ = wynn, ween, win; ȣ =  ou as in “oo”; ʃ = sh.

"A ſilent Þrone" deals with a place far to the north of Calradia, where the inhabitants have never heard of the Sea, where mountains and forests are all many have known for their entire lives.  This once peaceful land has been thrown into disarray by the foul deeds of the typical "Black Knight" character, who eventually killed the King of Zendar, the Lord of the entire realm.  With the King's death, the various peoples of the land have segregated from each other, and are even now building armies in misguided attempts to destroy their neighbours.  War is rampant, and the Black Knight is said to be returning to take control of the Throne of Zendar - with this news, many forlorn and hopeless men turn to banditry and raiding, as their lives are irreparably damaged by war on all fronts.

Now, onto business.  The Broken Land mod being nearly complete, in terms of what I feel I want to do with it (bearing in mind the inevitable bugs and faults that you, the modding/mod-using community, will find), I thought I'd have a crack at something a little more complex, in many ways.

For a start, this time I'm going to be using my own models and textures (and those of anyone who'd like to contribute :p) to create a more diverse range of customization for the character and his heroes, and also a higher degree of definition between factions.  I intend to work on the dialog of the game, mainly to sort out various errors in the Native dialogue, but also to add character to the Lords and Knights the player will meet (for example, I doubt the Mountain King Borgar will speak as eloquently as the Hill King Pallos [you'll see what I mean in coming screenshots :p]).  As with Broken Land, there will, of course, be more troops, outlaws, &c &c, and I think I'll start adding new heroes in the next few days.  Soon after that, I'll get to work on the Dark Crusader faction, a bunch of really sinister guys led by the Black Knight who may or may not try to take Zendar (so as to give the game a sense of purpose other than experiencing the excellent M&B engine and ruling t3h w0rldz!!!!11!!1eleven).

This is a work in progress, and it is nowhere near finished, although I may start releasing various versions soon.

Any help offered will probably be accepted - I am definitely in the market for a modeller/texturer/scripter, seeing as how I suck at all of that and really just make maps and stories :p

Currently done:

Map
New Map Textures
(thanks, italiano!)

To do:

Complete troop trees
Add non-player factions and their towns etc.
Add more items
Finish Dialog

Requests:

For anyone who has the time, I'd quite like a Black Plate version of the standard (wingless) Great Helm and Plate Gauntlets - also, any evil looking swords anyone has kicking around will be gratefully accepted, should they be offered!

Hah, I like the implementation of old English.

Nethoras - before saying something like that at least read the post or know what you're talking about. It is in English, albeit a bit back-dated. All of those characters have evolved to the ones we use today. Besides, last time I checked, "anywayz" isn't proper English either.

The black knight's name is Athaelwynn, or something to that effect, right?

I like the mod's concept. I look forward to it. Keep us posted.

I might implement a "surprise", if I can work out how to use triggers to get Athaelwynn's party to show up later on in a game, based on the name.  I doubt many will get it before they see the finished version, though :p

For the record - spelled is speeld wrong xD as is whatever, anyway, couldn't, to, because, and it's.

I believe I would win in a "Galead vs Burzum GRAMMAR NAZI Title Match Fight", mainly for incorporating spelling in my technique.

If you want things to be explained to you, you have to take the time to listen to the explanation, or, in this case, read it.  Doesn't take too long, unless you weren't born with the inate gift to read Chaucer.

I like the idea.  I also like how you use some old English.  Edit: I can do some scripting if you send me something to do but it's probably best if you get a really good scripter for fancy scripts.  I also have my own mod that I am working on so I cant do too much.

Hehe, no, I'm the grammar Nazi, for being anti-people-who-can't-spell/speak-English-up-to-the-standards-of-an-English-Public-(read-private)-School

I'm so tired I could die.

Heh, don't worry about not reading it, man, I do that kind of thing all the time.  Like once I didn't read the "mind the gap" sign on the train, and... You can guess the rest.

I like the idea.  I also like how you use some old English.

Thanks!  I'm going to see if I can somehow get the M&B font to display Middle English script (I have an idea that might require the use of books, which would be done using dialog [i.e. treating the book as an NPC]).

Just so you know while you posted your last post I was editing mine.

I dont think Nethoras will get that unless he lives in England or has been there.

Do you think there's any way to make the day/night cycle longer?  I've looked through the scripts/triggers/simple triggers files, but I can't see anything, so I'm just going to have to make icons smaller (to give the map a greater scale)..

How about some real old english ;)

Anyway, the mod sounds promising, so I eagerly await it (we seem to have a lack of fantasy Calradia mods).

That might be part of a sign in Zendar, if I can work out how to put it in like that :p

Or possibly like this:

Quote
yppan & lóc þone landreſt þæs cyning þæs landmearca sweart kniȝtý Aðælƿ ámyrðriande þon yow æltǽwelíce léohtscéawiga þone pæð Godes.

Man, that took a long time to work out -_-

I did originally read the title as Silent Pron mod. Imagine my disappointment ;)

On a similar note, does anyone here know Cradle of Filth's latest album "Thornography"?

"Þornography".  How very funny, Mr. Davies.

Edit:  However, equally, it could be "Þ-ography" :s
