Introduction

I have been thinking about hosting a North American battle tournament after Battle Innovation Tournament, but the announcement of 5-a-Side Cup 2013 gave me the idea to host the first ever North American-only 5-a-Side tournament.

I don't aim for the tournament to last very long, I'd rather it be a sort of bridge between BIT and the next battle tournament. A short group stage with playoffs thereafter would be enough. It would be best if the tournament didn't last any longer than 6-7 weeks, depending on the number of teams that register.

We'll be aiming to start Week 1 of the tournament's group stage on May 4th.

Rules*

Team Rules:
  • No more than 10 members per team, no fewer than 6.
  • No player may be a member of more than one team.
  • Alterations may be made to team rosters at any time during the group stage by posting in the tournament thread. Team rosters will no longer be permitted to be changed after the elimination stage of the tournament has begun.
  • A captain must be appointed to organize matches with other team captains and communicate during matches.
  • A co-captain may be appointed, but is not necessary.
  • Since this is a North America tournament, teams with European players will have to play their matches on North American servers. However, North American teams are required to find the best possible server for both teams that's available in North America (in most cases, an east coast server). In the unlikely case of two teams made up mostly of European players facing off, the teams are free to use any server they agree upon.
Match Rules:
Match Settings:
  • 8-round maps, 2 maps per match.
  • 360 second rounds.
  • 1000 starting gold.
  • Fastest combat speed.
  • Locked spectator mode. However, if both teams agree, spectator mode may be unlocked.
  • Each team may only field 5 players in a match: 2 infantry, 2 archer/xbow and 1 cavalry.
  • After 4 rounds with one spawn and faction, the teams must swap.
  • Substitutions may only be made between 4-round sets.
  • If a player mistakenly spawns in with an incorrect class (for example, 3-1-1 instead of the accepted 2-2-1) then that player must sit the round out. The only exception to this rule is if the mistake is made in the first round of a set, in which case a reset is acceptable.
  • Team 1 plays top faction of first map first, then Team 2 plays top faction of second map first.
  • Match results must be posted in the tournament thread and must include screenshots from all four sets.
Fixture Rules:
  • Maps will be randomly drawn from the total pot of maps. The classification of the first map chosen will then be removed, forcing the second map to be drawn from the remaining classification. No two maps played in the same week will be from the same map classification.
  • Once one map is drawn for a fixture and played, it will not be available to be drawn until all other maps from its map classification have also been played.
  • Factions will be chosen the same way maps are. The only difference is that there are fewer restrictions on factions; a faction may be repeated during one match, but if the same two are picked for both maps, the last faction drawn will be redrawn. Example scenario: Sarranid vs. Swadia on Ruins, Swadia vs. Sarranid on San'di'bousch. If such is drawn, the final faction (Sarranid in this case) will be redrawn from the remaining factions.
Free Agent Rules:
  • The Free Agent List will be both used as an 'advertising place' for prospective team members as well as a pool from which emergency substitutions can be drawn from. If a team can not field 5 players, then the team may emergency substitute a player from the Free Agent List.
  • Teams may only use one emergency substitute per match.
  • Teams may only use one emergency substitute for every two matches.
  • A Free Agent may only play for each team once throughout the group stage. However, teams may recruit a Free Agent at any time during the group stage.
  • Teams must note if they used an emergency substitute when posting match results.
Other Rules:
  • During the group stage, tied matches will stand as such. During the elimination stage, tied matches will be decided with a third map.
  • Tied rounds will not be replayed.
  • Winner is decided by total round wins.

Group Stage Rules:
  • Only 3 teams from each group of 7 will move on the the Elimination Stage of the tournament.
  • The team that places 1st in each group will move directly to semi finals, while the 2nd and 3rd place teams will fight in the quarter finals.

*Rules are completely up for debate. Part of the reason I've posted the thread this early is to encourage discussion. Anything is subject to change if a sufficiently large portion of the community calls for it.

There's no rule against it. I hope to see two TMW teams, as in BIT, so I'm sure you'd be on one of them.

Though if not with TMW, European teams are welcome to register. Any potential EU teams will just have to keep in mind that the tournament is North American, so they'd have to play entire matches on NA servers.
 
Would recommend doing some heavy culling on the map pool. Don't worry about offending people, just go ahead and cull like half of those maps because seriously, expecting people to prepare for 15 different ones is unfair and likely detrimental to the interest the tournament will see. ~10 is ideal with the open mixed closed format.
 
I had thought it would be too many. I personally would have already taken out 3 or 4 of them that are in there now, but I thought I would leave it to the community and potential captains to decide which to remove. 10 sounds like a good number of maps. I'll probably put it to a vote at some point, or consult people directly.

That's fair. Personally I don't see the value in leaving the decision to people with any additional motivation beyond having a good, enjoyable and entertaining tournament. You have admins. Why not use them?

Just making suggestions anyway. I don't think a poll would be catastrophic or anything. Good luck with the tourney!

EDIT: Rounds should be 300 seconds. In EU we play 300 seconds for 8vs8 and it's often too long.

I'd blame the 2 minute that become 5 between swaps and the 5 minute that become 10+ between map potty breaks you guys take.  Never seen such small bladders.     

300 seconds leads to the numerous drawn rounds the EU community has.  NA runs 360 and rarely has this happen.
