Sergeant Knight
The death of Duke Robert I has left Normandy in turmoil with Norman barons waging war against each other, defying the young heir William. Son to a tanner’s daughter he is challenged by the most rebellious baron, Gui de Brionne, who claims the reign for himself in the name of his forebear Rollo. Under his banners the insurgent nobles gather in Bayeux, plotting against the duke. After a failed attempt on his life William rallies his loyalist supporters and marches towards Caen to meet the conspirators in open battle at Val-ès-Dunes.
The barons have led their men over the river Orne at the ford of Bully, south of Alemaigne, marching towards Conteville. About half the way between Secqueville and Bellengreville they take formation, their right flank covered by a hill and the marshlands of the Sémillon on the left, where horses can barely pass.
In the meantime the hosts of the duke have arrived from the east and await further reinforcements before crossing the river Sémillon near Bellengreville. Marching along the river they will form up in the south and cross the valley of Val-ès-Dunes to approach the enemy. The main battle will be fought here, but in the later skirmishes only the side can prevail that forces the other off the field and can claim most of the area for itself.

Defending the honour of the Dux are men gathered from those loyal to him. The Maisun de Furnun stand beside Wardecors del Duc to crush the rebellion. Standing against them are the Wardecors de Guiun and the rest of the Normant loyal to Gui de Brionne, ready to fight against the young Dux, and to kill him.
