SCRIPTORIUM AMANUENSIS - 1257 AD Artworks

Grandmaster Knight
Along with the enormous amount of work forged by the sweat of kuauik and Dr.Tomas, comes my little contribution to 1257.
Since the mod was still using many native images for its menus, it was decided to add new artworks, thought and drawn exclusively for 1257 AD, in substitution of the native artworks - worry not, good ol' Maciejowski bible will remain!

Due to the strictly historical character of 1257, which struggles to recreate as realistically as possible the central years of the XIII c., I tried to keep the same attention to history in all of the drawings. While several but not all of the artworks are based on historical events happened between 1230 and 1265, all of them are researched and based on medieval visual sources. For more details, just click on the links above the images: each has a description in english (and in italian, my native language), by which you can learn some basic informations on events, life, equipment and characters in those troubled years of medieval.

Each artwork is completely handmade with pencils and little ink.
Each culture (religion) has an artwork for village, castle and city.
Each troop tree has its own artwork and so each bandit unit.

I wish to thank to following for their most gentle contribution, direct or indirect, without which this work would have been impossible - or, at least, less accurate:

Dr.Tomas, for proposing and supporting the project and for the help he provided in answering the many question of a westerner on the mysterious medieval Baltic.
kuauik, for his support and his help with byzantine clothing.
mahotmair1, for his help on the complex subject of hijab in the middle-ages.
druzhina, for his indirect help on providing a lot of invaluable medieval visual sources, such as the Hadith Bayad wa Riyad and the Cantigas de Santa Maria.
Celtichugs, for his indirect help on the often misunderstood and badly represented clothing in medieval scottish highlands - I hope I got it right!
NikeBG, for his great help and the great amount of material he shared on medieval Bulgaria.
Al_Mansur, for his invaluable help with Castillans and medieval architecture.
phoenix[illusion]
MihailoSRB
for their efforts and research on XIII century Serbian armies.

Thanks for your contribution F.F.C._fritz. We realy like your style and it improved the character of our mod massively.

Let's put something sticky on this thread!

I like the art as well. It reminds me of Angus McBride who's art I enjoy thoroughly.

Hope you don't mind me testing this, but maybe it could be implemented into the game in this way:

although I think they like to stick with the theme of the maciejowski bible illuminations and other contemporary art.

You could also use a program to color in the picture.

That might actually be good, just because the black and white can interfere with the black text and menu buttons at the menu.

I hope he doesn't get mad at me showing his work and editing it, just want to show how his art could be implemented. But here's a version that has transparency. This would overlay nicely on the Warband background for menus and encounters. Granted it's lost alot of it's shading when changing it to more of a sketch based off grayscale.

Thanks everybody

thick1988: no worries about reworking, I'm not getting mad about it!

I don't know, I see there is a problem with some of the artworks (i.e. Catholic village), but honestly I'd rather cut part of them than the transparency version
I prefer the first modified version, even if I think it could cover the buttons even more than the original. Sadly I think that a problem with reading would remain even with colours. What programme are you using, btw?

An alternate way would be to copy the typical background of the encounter or village menus. Then lay the picture you drew over it with some transparency given to the M&B texture so that it blends into the background of your drawing. That might be best, but I'm at work now and have no M&B access to get the texture

I'm not sure I'm understanding, you mean to put two different background drawings one over another?

Well, maybe another solution may be to underline the words with a brown/parchment colour, like this (just with parchment brown instead of light blue).

lettura-testo-iOS.jpg

I don't know if it is possible, but I think it may be a nice compromise.
