I was originally making a mod like this, but I gave up. And it was for single player.
The last Samurai = Badass.
ugh... As a Japanese-American, I found the whole Last Samurai movie distasteful and racist for a couple of reasons.
The movie is clearly modeled on the Seinan War (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seinan_War). The plot makes this pretty clear--the political issue was about the treatment of Samurai in the new order after the revolution. An old honorable general who is friends with the Prime minister leads a rebellion based on his personal conception of honor, but the rebellion is crushed by the government forces. A few problems:
1) the depiction of Samurai as unwilling to change and using 17th century weapons/armor in the 19th century. This is wholly, completely, and offensively inaccurate. It's highly ironic, because the leader of the Satsuma Rebellion, Saigo Takamori, favored modernization in training/technique. He even wore a Prussian-style military uniform until his defeat when he committed ritual suicide. His army was organized into European-style divisions, with Western-style military uniforms, armed with Enfield Rifles, Field Artillery, and siege guns. There were no large formations of colorfully dressed Samurai equipped in the 17th century style. The depiction Japanese Samurai as archaic, unwilling to change, "noble savages" is wholly inaccurate, patronizing, and offensive.
2) the conscious replication of the White-man-comes-to-the-rescue Hollywood Archetype as represented in Last Samurai. In an obvious parallel to "Dances with Wolves"--even though the entire archetype simply didn't fit the historical situation in any way. Algren is the one who comes up with the tactics to be used in the decisive battle, not the Katsumoto (unlike Saigo, who most definately commanded his own army). European military advisors did attach to Shogunate forces in the 1660s--but not to Saigo Takamori's Satsuma Rebellion (he actually fought and defeated these forces in the Boshin War). The Hollywood archetype that if a White actor arrives on the scene, he must educate and lead the noble sav_ages continues.
Frankly, I have little good to say about the movie's story or script. It has some pretty good action sequences, but if you have any interest in the actual Sengoku Period, Samurai culture, or Japanese History, I cannot recommend Last Samurai in the least.
Anyways.. sorry for the rant.
