Suddenly: ads in the browsers. EVERYWHERE! - FIXED

Users who are viewing this thread

Just today there are links with ads in my browsers.
Both Chrome and Avant (IE add-on). And not just Taleworlds forum, but all internet pages.

Cleared all cookies and scanned PC with Microsoft Security Essentials. Nothing.
Any good malware scanners you can recommend?

(Installed Scribus yesterday - open source program - and doubt that's it. There was nothing yesterday.
And haven't updated browsers in a long time).

1. Get HijackThis!
2. Run, scan, save log
3. Copy/paste log here

The page on 3. does give good hints on what might be right/wrong, but if still unsure, paste the log 'ere in a spoiler or something.

Also check add/remove programs and like Arnas said, browser extensions.

Well this is ironic:

NO!

Hmm. HijackThis looks too advanced for me.
Got an error mesage while running HijackThis.
I use Win7 64 bit, and someone is asking for it to be updated to that.

Man, if I saw anything close to that on my computer, I would wipe it. Most of that **** will leave footprints long after you get rid of the ads. I would consider your system compromised.

Uninstall your browsers and see if Internet Explorer has the same issue. If it does, not only did the problem make IE work, your system is infected on a deeper level.

Did you paste the log to the page on 3.?

It states this one as "extremely nasty":
O2 - BHO: Yontoo Layers - {FD72061E-9FDE-484D-A58A-0BAB4151CAD8} - C:\Program Files (x86)\Yontoo\YontooIEClient.dll
Everything else seems legit.

So scan again, find that line, check the box and press "Fix checked". Unless, of course, it's something you know what it is and why it's there. Would probably pay to look elsewhere on your compy for "Yontoo" in general.

Actually just checked all programs and found Yontoo suspicious

Uninstalled it (all components) and now the ads seem to have stopped!

Weird and disturbing that Microsoft Security Essentials didn't warn about it, and I've never agreed to install it
