I sat through Catholic mass yesterday and it was harrowing. I'd been told that it would last for one hour at the most, but it went on for more than double of that. It was an endless cycle of standing, praying, crossing oneself, singing, sitting, kneeling, praying, strange rituals, readings from the bible, praying, crossing oneself and singing. I didn't try to take part in it because I felt it would be disingenuous at first, but then I came to loathe the whole ceremony. It made the kind of mass I'm used to seem exciting in comparison.
Rule of thumb: NEVER go to mass during major holidays. Even the evening one will be crowded.
