Narf's Men-at-Arms Pack v2.0 -released 2016-09-19

-> CLICK ON THESE WORDS TO GET IT <-

What it is:

OSP item pack containing some armours meant to be used on missile and infantry type units.  They would be most appropriate on Rhodok/Swadian crossbowmen and infantry, or for mods incorporating 14th/15th century Western European infantry.  The heavier versions of the armour in this pack could also fit on the poorer type of knights or their retainers.

This is an update of the original pack from 2012, but much of is is redone from scratch.  The models are fairly modular, so certain parts can be rearranged in openBRF to create the exact configuration you want for your armour.  I have not included every permutation and every colour version for every item, because it would just get overwhelming, but for those who are more enterprising, the option is there.

Most items should fit with Native.

In this OSP:

BODY:
-14th or 15th century style brigandine (probably more like 15th, but I think it's generic enough to pass as 14th as well)
-an aketon/ padded jack
-hauberk (in an alpha/test version, I may some day do it properly, but if not then better than nothing I guess)

ARMS:
-padded
-jack chains
-mail sleeve
-plate harness

LEGS:
-some hose.  Like, tights.
-same, but with archers knees to man em up a bit
-same, but with full cuisses
-leather boots (folded down)
-greaves with sabatons or half boot

HANDS:
-leather duelist's gauntlets
-demi-gaintlets
-finger gauntlets

HELMS:
-a klappvisier bascinet based on a well-known relic from Zitta (Switzerland)
-jawbone visor sallet, optional bevor, open and closed versions, painted and polished versions
-archer's sallet
-three kettlehats
-eyeslot kettlehat
-hood with liripipe, mail coif, and padded coif to go with the helms

Installation instructions

If you are not using the module system, this is what you need to do (if you are, I assume you don't need instructions):

If you have not already done so, I suggest you duplicate the folder "Native" (default path C:\Program Files (x86)\Mount&Blade Warband\Modules\Native), and rename it to whatever you would like your new mod to be called.  In that way you will always have the default files to recover from mistakes, and still play Vanilla if you really hate this stuff.

1. Copy the contents of the Resource and Textures folders from this OSP to the corresponding folders in your mod directory.

2. Open module.ini in your mod folder, use ctrl+f to find the line "load_resource = materials_face_gen".  Below that line, add these two lines:
load_mod_resource = men_at_arms
load_mod_resource = men_at_arms_lods

Save and close the file.

3. Open item_kinds1.txt in your mod folder.  On the second line, directly under "itemsfile version 3", increase the number by 45.  If you have no other mods installed, this number will be 603, and should therefore be increased to 648.

4. With this file still open, open the file included in this OSP named item_kinds_entries.txt.  Press ctrl+a to select the entire contents of the file, then press ctrl+c to copy them.  Go back to item_kinds1.txt, scroll to the very bottom of the file, place your cursor just above the line that begins with "itm_items_end...", and press ctrl_v to paste the lines for the new items.

Save and close the file.

5. Play game.

The Rhodoks just got a metric F****load cooler.

EDIT: Here's itemkinds1 lines if anyone wants 'em. I think the number to add is 18. Don't make me count...

So the brigandines don't have legs, and as I understand it the hose is suppose to go with them.
They are, however, incompatible with Native boots (no thighs), and if we unset itp_covers_legs it looks ugly with the default trouser bulging at the knees over the hose, which also clip through the back of Native's armor. Is there a way to make them more usable to the player other than restricting item sets?

Thx a lot Jhaukewood !

No problem! Couldn't wait to get these in-game myself, so I figured I might as well be some help. Hope they work.

@Somebody: I don't think there's anything else you can do, although some skirt-ish pieces like hauberks (that are long and don't model legs) work with the hose. Makes me wish that all Warband pieces were like that, though. I hate the seams on the legs between the boot and the armor.

You could do some editing, sure.  Assuming you have some ability with any 3d software.  You just divide the legs into two separate meshes, maybe shift them to line up with native's stuff.  But it'll look like crap with the native stuff anyway.  You could also try taking the native trousers and using those as a multimesh.

Basically, I didn't want to be restricted by the way they chose to divide the mesh at the knee, plus the way the native bodies were originally made forces artists to make models that are very disproportionate and anatomically... strange.  So I decided to do it this way and just make some sets that work together.  Also, the native stuff doesn't all follow a universal template, so no matter what you do, there is no way to make items that fit all the native stuff.  So the bottom line is, I made a deliberate choice to make some models that work perfectly (mostly) with each other, instead of making a bunch of artistic compromises and coming up with stuff that kind of works with everything, but doesn't really work properly with anything

EDIT- here's an edited version of the hose.

https://rapidshare.com/files/758986395/hose_shortened.SMD

Rename it xxx.2, where xxx is the armour you want the shortened version of the hose to be attached to.

Great as always.Have you thought of making armors from famous movies i.e. Lord of the Rings,Braveheart(some cool mail shirts here),The Gladiator(Maybe a Narf's Roman Armor Pack),A Knight's Tale(Good Plates),Game of Thrones and so on.

I'm going to be too busy for a while to put any serious work into it, so I decided to release it now so as not to loose interest.

People don't seem to realize that he's releasing over-the-top quality work for free, he's not a personal modeler or something.

Stop bothering the man, or pay for his work already

I was going to rip the thighs from Native's brigandine and remap it to the arm texture, but I guess this works too. I'm too lazy to colour-coordinate anything, so the thighs are hose/green/purple_shortened while the legging stuff is posted above. Vertex colour works pretty well on either version.

Hey, only caught the last bit of this; something about legs / armor being a matched set?

I seriously considered converting everything in Native and all of the OSP stuff in Blood and Steel to matched sets- cut all pants at the knee joints or wherever they'd fit perfectly with a given set of boots, match the mesh verts, etc..

It would make my job as a game designer a lot simpler (one stat line, instead of having curves for boots, gloves, body armor) and aesthetically it'd make life a lot easier in terms of matching gear and making sure it met my (subjective) standards.

Problem there is that, well, I'd have to tear up a lot of things and re-rig., sometimes fix UVs.  Big job.  And players would whine, guaranteed, because they could no longer use X boots with Y gloves with Z armor for their personalized Ultimate Knight Dude look

I agree it's un-ideal and I really don't like how paper-doll was handled on this engine at all; I'd like to have a body under the clothing like Oblivion, and I don't really care about boots, so I thought about making all "body armor" actually be boots, so that I could have bodies under the clothing, girls could have scandalous gear if I really felt like it, etc..

Then I reminded myself that it's probably a 60-hour job to convert everything even if I was pretty sloppy and that the Native "naked" body meshes were obviously never meant to be seen, plus the whining I got to hear for merely getting rid of those ridiculous "arm guards" on the gloves because I was tired of seeing them clip stuff... and er, found something else to do
