I meant whether rapier would be an effective weapon in a fight involving melee weapons. You know, it seems... not that powerful or even intimidating (idk). An expert fencer might disagree, but that's not the point. I don't know.

Ninja'd again, thanks.

It all comes down to training and experience. If you've been using a cricket bat all your life and never touched a rapier, the bat will probably be a better choice.

Naaah. That's proper fighting. Fencing kind of necessitates something sleeker than two and a half feet of German meat cleaver.

Not really: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_school_of_fencing
Interestingly enough, the German word for fencing is Fechten which in turn is related to the English to fight and originally it simply meant exactly that.

Depends on the rapier and what other melee weapon it's up against. The toothpick he's using might not be the greatest but a thicker rapier is certainly competitive.

What he's using there is more akin to a Spada de Lato, or proto-rapier/Renaissance rapier than a full fencing rapier though. I find those to be preferable since the blade still retains a diamond shape, and some weight for slashing. But it offers far better mobility and protection of the sword hand than an arming sword or a bastard sword.

Basically this:

That. So much that. The experience of the person matters much more than the choice of weapon (in melee, that is). For example, a notorious prison shanker will be much more dangerous with a small knife than with a zweihander. A nerd, who only ever fought in AD&D, wielding a halberd (or a katana or whatever) will lose 99,9999999997% of the times against a professional head-basher caveman armed with a rock.

Another nice little mixed weapon spar. Instead of a rapier, its a sword and buckler against a longsword.

Pretty much this, though.

No problem.

And the above mentioned stuff is pretty much why I've always chosen to diversify my training regime with lots of different weapon types rather than specialise in one particular. You can't always choose what you have to fight with.

I can't wait for world war 3. All the sword enthusiasts are gonna be so desperate to actually swing their sword at something that isn't air or soft bamboo. Woe betide anyone who tries to  attack oxford or cambridge.

The ****? Maybe you're thinking of World War 4, in which case everyone in those areas is likely dead already from radiation poisoning (and guns would still be more dangerous). I would get a big laugh at a bunch of sword fanatics getting the **** bombed out of them as they swing at nothing.
