Brief Overview

After many long months of toil and smithying, the Vikingr devlopment team is proud to present Vikingr 0.84 for the Warband community. We have strived to recreate history in the golden age of the Vikings whose influence upon much of Northern Europe is without equal. Fight with the spear and the axe, with the shield and the horse, become the saga hero and let forth the blood-gore in the landscapes of an unforgiving land.



You need version 1.143 of warband for this to work!

Extra soundpatch, should improve performance and reduce the amount of crashes some people have

Vikingr version for servers, which is just the files without the Music, Sounds and Textures folders can be downloaded at Gamefront.
(if it doesn't work please let me know and we'll sort it out.)

Features.

Raid game mode. The attackers have to bring torches, burn target houses and then pick up the loot.
Longboat battle, where two ships meet to fight.
Lots of new equipment.
Beautiful maps and sounds that will get you into the right atmosphere.
Troop limiter, to get rid of archer and cav spam, keeping it balanced.
Decapitation, you will be able to chop off heads!
Banner that heal and motivate you teammates.
Spears that break on impact.
Warriors that fall of their horse.
Disarm your opponents by riding them over, get them of their horse or punch them!
Horns that you can blow by pressing "H".
You can crouch by pressing "C".
You can taunt by pressing "Q" and for shield bash taunting by pressing the block button + "Q".
Berserkers can get into a rage by pressing "P", giving them a temporary damage reduction, suffering the rest when they get out of their rage.

We will make sure that our server Fyrningum runs the new version as soon as possible.
 
And then the dells of England, wave-swepted shores of Normandy, misty Fjords of Scandanavia and the wide Steppes of Rus sang with the baying of trumpets as they herald a new Era in the age of the Vikingr!

These trumpet's voices were met with the shrill cry of warriors, who have come for blood! Thusly battle began...
 
Ok since servers aren't updated I played some games with bots. What I like is that the Spear can break now, really nice effect. Also that you can be knocked off your horse when damaged is also nice.

What I didn't like is the Berserker. Really seems out of place with the equipment and speed etc. Its now worse then how they were before. Probably best to remove them or have them properly in the game with unique and accurate (so no helmets, shirts) equipment.

Not sure if you also get slower if your damaged like horses, kinda felt like it. If not its a nice idea to implement in the future.

But I have few questions about historical details:

1) Why class "Berserkr" have not spears? Class "wolf skins" (Úlfhéðnar (singular Úlfhéðinn)) were fighting with spears.
Why class "Berserkr" have not shields (for example, small shields)? Some berserkers can fight with shields! Even those who are gnawed their shield, according to the saga, must were have this shield, all the same, and not the fact that they are always and all his gnawed.

2) Why "Boyar Son" on English language, but not Russian as others names of classes of Rus (Strelec, Druzhinnik, Knyaz)??
This class need/should to call as simply "Boyarin" or "Knyazhiy muzh" (But not "Boyarskiy syn")

Early sons of boyars in a life/in everyday life called "boyarin" or "knyazhiy muzh" as military class and called as "boyarskiy syn" simply in peaceful life.
Only near 1259 year their begin to call "boyarskiy syn" as military class too.   





 
You are right about the berserkers, but we decided to give them a few disadvantages to compensate for the "rage" ability. With a shield the idea would have been to give the beserker one which he can not use in rage mode, but we had problems restricting the usage, so the shield could be easily just re-equipped after entering rage mode. Also the shield could be used to just run into the enemy formation unharmed by keeping his cover up, and there would be no way to keep him away.
Similarly the spear was not given to him to keep him from using range as an advantage in rage mode, so he wouldn't just backpedal away while hitting the enemy (which would be very un-berserk-y).
Instead he is forced to take cover among his better protected allies until there is a good opportunity to charge with all his might, getting close. These circumstances just force him to behave how he is supposed to, so he is specialized rather than being a "better Hirdman".

About the Rus we will have to change a lot in the next patch, as Dragomir also wrote recently the tunics are too expensive to be for free, and a lot of equipment could be added or reworked. For 0.84 however all this would have taken way too long, so it is better done properly for the next patches.
 
Hm it seems there are a few problems we didn't notice when testing, like female taunts without cooldown, and dropped weapons staying on the map throughout an entire map of battle, but we will work on a hotfix for it, that will soon be open for download, as well as an updated complete installer.

I can just recommend ignoring those for now (although the female taunts are really hard to endure), the hotfix will be a small thing to download and cover those things.
 
How do you activate the rage mode for the Berserkers?

Also maybe remove from them: Helmets, tunics. Ideally we would have: Naked body with Wolf/Bear skin "cape". Tunics with Wolf/Bear skin "cape". Wolf/Bear head "helmet".

Keeping your distance. Ulfhednar would fight as "wolves", who do not blindly charge in like bears (Berserkers?). Seeing the spear dance (which isn't a ideal weapon to go on a rampage) I think its not going to the inaccurate. Same with a shield. A Berserker would have used a shield as a shield anyways.
