M&B 0.800 - First Impressions
« on: November 24, 2006, 04:45:49 PM »
Since it is an offical release now, I assume it's okay to split out my post again. If not, sorry for the moderating overhead, Janus :)

The Good:
1. Item names and modifiers are now capitalized.
2. Quick Save key (not sure if it works ...).
3. The obvious weapons on the PC model when sheathed.
4. The new textures. Water looks killer.
5. New voice-overs.
6. New menu backgrounds and layout.
7. Progress bars and on-screen info ("left click to continue", etc).
8. Town menu text smaller.
9. New text renders nicely on a snowy battlefield.
10. Faster world map speed!
11. New arenas are very nice.
12. New armor types!
13. New spearhead cursor.
14. Horses don't walk through allied troops anymore! Foot combat still sucks though because of the friggin' flinching.
15. Neat new world map icons (caravan icon has a mule!).
16. Real-sized trees on the battlefield.
17. You can walk up the side of the battlefield edge a little.
18. OMG! It appears that you can have multiple parties fighting in one fight! I noticed that THREE Vaegir parties were in combat with ONE Swadian party on the world map: (EDIT: seems to be broken. If you fight in one of these battles, you crash the game.)
19. You now have to first sneak into a town to ask a lord for forgiveness ... nice.

The Bad:
1. Things broken that weren't broken in the last version that aren't graphics related.
    a. River pirate quest broken.
    b. Caravan quest (quests?) broken.
    c. Both Marnid and Borcha recruitment broken.
2. Installer doesn't offer latest DirectX (to be fair, it isn't officially released yet Smile )
3. While the shield icon looks great, and visually shows damage, the current shield hitpoints should be next to it (not a "n/200", like before, just current hit points left).
4. Horse hitpoints appear to have been lessened. Seems they go down easy.
5. Penalty to NPC party skills. It's kind of silly to have an experienced NPC join you, but suddenly he can't work his skills to his full potential because he isn't the party leader. Perhaps this new penalty system would make sense for Leader skills, but the whole purpose of a Party is to create a mix of skills. This new, bad system will just force the player to create a "jack-of-all-trades" character just to get some Spotting skill or some Surgery skill. I think this change is potentially game breaking, especially for NPC-heavy mods like Extra NPC mod. You're going to be forced to just forget Party skills altogether and just have combat-heavy NPCs. I really wish Party skills worked like 0.711.

The Ugly:
1. Dialogue text is even BIGGER than before!?!?! EDIT: You can scale the font on your own. 80 percent works about right.
2. Interiors (Zendar trainer's interior) too dark.
3. World map view angle too restrictive. Better the old way.
4. Party icons on the world map very fuzzy unless zoomed in almost all the way.

The Foreshadowing:
1. Town-entering menus say "... is held by friendly troops." Perhaps a strong indication of town capturing in the next release (the stuff rolled back).

More to come as I play around some.

I agree except, the water still looks like crap for me? I have a Radeon 8500.

Is it because my video card can't handle it or what? (Sorry to get off topic a little, but I didn't wanna make a new thread)

Basically yup. The new textures use shader model 2.0, Radeon's earlier than the 9500 only support Shader 1.0

As for foreshadowing - notice most of the problems are related to the mod system. Good indication of what's likely to have been changed...

Yes, it would appear that there are tons of module system changes ... which is a very, very good thing.

Plus mod specific music (not so important for mods like your's and silverkatanas, but will add hugely to mods like the last days and star wars).

You've got pretty much everything there Hardcode. I don't have anything to add to that list.

I do,
The good-
- 2x as many beard/mustache and hair styles (santa beard, bald monk, and lotsa slick hair are now available, along with others of course)
- world map has shadow (but the numbers have shadows to....kinda weird)
- 3 team ffa for tornements in all cities, many different arena varients
- Training grounds next to zendar, get to beat up dummies

The bad-
- Some shadow clipping and weird stuff
- AI seems even worse than before...

The ugly-
- You can crouch lance arena walls multiple times
- Arena archers dont have quivers

Um, yeha

Remember in the (I think) previous version, when there was a bug that made you unable to recruit Borcha? Unless I'm mistaken, that was fixed by the community the following day. I really hope the same can be done to the simmilar bugs in this version, namely the broken River Pirate quest and the recruitment, (Or lack thereof), of Marnid and Borcha. It's not me being bitchy or stubborn or anything, but unfortunately I find that I can't play the game until that is fixed. That is, I can live with the River Pirate quest broken, but the game just isn't quite the same without Marnid and Borcha. *Sniff!* I miss the dorky-looking Marnid and the hobo/lowlife Borcha and his 1337 friendly fire-headshooting skills.

Currently, I'm just goofing about in the arena. Kind of a shame.

FIrst impression is rather good, but there's some stuff that needs fixing.

GFX:
- Some lesser gfx glitches (this is expected, clipping stuff and so on) and some larger ones (could very well be faulty drivers at my end, at night the entire map gained a checkerboard shadow)
- Hugeass fonts

Scripting:
- Arena-guy does his usual bit about training being a requirement, then asks if you want to fight for red/blue/whatever team.
- As mentioned before, the sheriff, Marnid and Borcha.

Sound:
- Is it a even longer pause in the horse galloping loop now? *clack-clack* *clack-clack* *clack-clack* *looong pause* *clack-clack* *clack-clack* *clack-clack* *looong pause* etc...

Well, nothing terribible critcal yet, better head back to the game and fool around some more.

The thing that's really p***ing me off is the broken character import function. Yes, it means that much to me.

Also, the game seems a whole lot harder, partially because you CANNOT run from other people on the adventure map (How did they get so fast?), and partially because the horses are a lot weaker and can't run down infantry anymore.

The broken caravan bug kinda irritated me, as well, cause I'd just spent AGES solo fighting my way through several now-much-harder enemies that are impossible to out-run, only to have the game crash on me when I tried to collect.

Otherwise kinda cool...

Check your options. You may have set AI to good, but you recieved a fatal crash later. That means the Ai will be reser to poor.

I was playing around for a long time with AI on poor, and enemies were much simpler to kill, and I couldn't figure out why.

I keep going into towns and people will be missing. I actually managed to recruit marnid once, but I go back again and the armor seller is gone. Then I go to the tavern and the tavern keeper is missing as well. I start hopping around the map and every once and a while I will try to go to a town and people will just not be there. It is very strange, and can be very annoying. Trying to buy food from a merchant only to find that he isn't there isn't very fun. Has anyone else hit this snag?

Very pretty graphics, love the prerendered shadows.  Great water too.  Definitely some bugs...the multiple party battles as said, and Wercheg's bridge and river are in a weird place.

Cool.
