More siege options
« on: October 05, 2010, 10:11:51 PM »
Suggestion: Adding more siege options to the game.
I think there could be more sieging options in the game, without having to do much animating, to give a more realistic feel for the player and give more strategical options for the player. For example:

Option     []      Effect

Bombard          Reduce the enemy food storage by a randomized number, or make them 10% more likely to surrender. No battle
                        scenes/catapult animations needed.
Snipe out         Randomly deducts a small amount of enemy soldiers from the garrison, depending on the amount of archers in
some wall        your party.
guards.

Try to sway      Depending on your persuasion skill, try to get someone on the inside of the castle to open the gates or preform
someone into   other tasks for you to benefit the siege, paying them of course.
opening the
gates.

Maybe some sort of trojan horse thing too.

They good ideas?

These are good ideas. First time I found out I could "sneak inside" I expected to be able to jimmy the gate somehow and dispense with the ridiculous "we're too stupid to build more than one ladder" thing. Imagine my disappointment :P

Using all those trebuchets you see around to blow stuff up would be cool too.

Siege towers that do more than roll up, can climb up into them and use them as archer nests (like in Total War). Towers that can be destroyed/set on fire.

Battering rams.

Perhaps just a siege menu more inclusive than "assault with -A- ladder". Allow you to build a variety of tools/weapons over a period of time (again, like Total War).

In most cases, the more this played like an FPS Total War game, the better. That's basically what this game boils down to. Build an army and lead it in battle personally, as opposed to from a third person "god cam".

oh yeah...love battering rams

...and for the defender side...we can add: hot oil cauldrons, mud pits surrouding the castle and other defences too

Mud pits would be fun. What about boiling mud pits?

I like the trojan horse idea.
You will go in it with a few companions, and need to open the gate as soon as possible, how longer you wait how more guards will be alerted. Instead of a fight on the walls, you will have 1 in the walls.

*BUMP*

I am going to start getting into the coding mechanics of this game, I been only playing for about 3 months and since then, I have been more and more wrapped in it. I have done some small mods to Fallout 3 and Morrowind in the past, so I am pretty sure I can do 'SOMETHING' to this game, with all that being said, what you have mentioned

"
Bombard          Reduce the enemy food storage by a randomized number, or make them 10% more likely to surrender. No battle
                        scenes/catapult animations needed. "

seems more than feasible within any working mod.

I'll see what I can do but being realistic, it might take me about 2 weeks before I can personally accomplish anything. (Work, gf, etc) but I'll look into it for you. I'm inspired.

Or you could have an option to maybe plant a spy in the city/castle to be attacked. And before you offcially lay siege, send word to him to lower the gates at said time?

you could make it like a  50/50 chance that he is caught and imprisoned or he succeeds and you can send your men in?

If this idea makes it in, I definitely want boiling pitch and a torch to be able to be used by yourself/AI against AI/yourself... Though it'd need a system that will make it flow from higher areas to lower areas, and somehow be treated as a crossbow bolt against every guy it touches.

If a crocodile steals a child and promises its return if the father can correctly guess what the crocodile will do, how should the crocodile respond in the case that the father guesses that the child will not be returned?

Is the word "heterological", meaning "not applicable to itself," a heterological word?

Exactly, treated as a crossbow bolt..... hmmmm this would be a pretty big overall. I think what is possible is to make an area thats effected by a device that is 'planted' and 'activated'. So if a boiling pot of pitch is planted on top of your castle gates, and you trigger it, then after a wait time of 3 seconds the area underneath the pot is issued a random range of damage. That can be implemented into the game engine, well, thinking it over again, I think I'd like to look over the horses bump damage, simulate a horse running at the opponents at a certain speed etc... I dont know, but I'll bookmark this page too so when I go over things this week, I can see where I could use this.

It would be great if when you sneak into and enemy town or castle you could attack the enemy soldiers to weaken their defense somewhat. But they would catch on eventually and you'd have to escape before the the gate fell.
