This thread will be for Merlkir and Dablade and any other contributors wanting to show off their latest work and any suggestions regarding the art, models or textures. Ill also stick any reference links that may be useful for contributors here: We still really need some armor modellers to make some of these a reality.

I finnished the rivendell shields yesterday. I have four shapes (one cavalry, three infantry) and...hmm...like six patterns or so which can be mixed to produce various shields. And I also did a lossarnach axeman concept today. Looks good to me. Rather rural. Still have to think about the Vet and Master versions. They should look more gondorian. If you have any good suggestions, I'll be happy to hear them

Any ETA on when you'll be showing off your work, Mel?

I don't have a scanner here (college) so it'll have to wait till next Friday. But I'll have all weekend free (well, there's my school project, but that can wait a bit. small bit.) so I'll do as much as possible. I can describe it to you though

The lossarnach axeman wears a tunic (long to the knees) but with longer sleeves than this:

and has a very neutral looking two haded axe nothing fantasy. Yeah, and he has a padded coif. Not black though:

There are some small details known about a few of the feudal units. THe men of the green hills (pinnath gelin) dress in green I believe. There is some other stuff I dont remember off hand.  But I wouldnt bother having 3 seperate concepts for a single line of feudal units such as the axemen of lossarnarch. DDS creep is a problem already. A single outfit for each type of feudal unit is rough enough.

Im hoping to get each faction down to a single dds sheet for armor with 2 sheets apiece for gondor and rohan and 2 sheets for the orcs. This will greatly help the frame rates. I suppose I could spare a single sheet for the feudal units as well so that gives you at most 4-5 armor spaces to work with.

Maybe. There are quite a few references to black armour, especially with Gondor. I know everyone likes to think Gondor is filled with shiny soldiers and white tunics - but according to Tolkien there was plenty of black mail and clothing. I'd like to see a some black mail in the game, but I don't think it would show up as anything but a blob of black. Maybe a really dark blue-grey (as that's all real black mail is anyway)?

I plan using this as a referrence for rivendell archers. Of course the outfit (varkoč) will be blue and slightly modified..

Quite good. I'm sure that perhaps some rangers would choose or be stuck with leather, and not be able to take mail.

this is probably the most detailed "costume" site for the LOTR movies. alot of the external links to other sites (onering.net, etc.) are dead, but they have alot of pics and sketches for retty much all the major characters in the movies.

but, this isn't based on the movies, so it doesn't do much good 

There are many things on the movies which don't conflict with Tolkien's books. That ranger outfit is a good example.

All great stuff (I won't make further comments, as most of your work has been discussed already, so there's really no need, you know my thoughts anyway - I love it all). You're an excellent artist, Mel. Looking forward to seeing your new stuff.

About that ranger outfit. Do ithillien rangers still wear (in 2.11) that green-yellow "mommy's apron" stuff?
I think this movies design is very cool and practical and complex at the same time. Very complex...all the layers...Would look good in the game even without the cloak.

Sorry, Im not into movie stuff. Enough has crept in already. Its not because its inaccurate or poorly done, its because I want as little chance to irritate EA or New Line Cinema as possible. There are plenty of tolkien mods on the net but few full movie mods and ive made the decision to follow that example.

The rangers just wear a simple brown jerkin with the tree. The ranger captains are using that apron one.

I found this armor. I like it...would it fit easterlings or haradrim?



edit: also found this hauberk. I think Damien described something like this for the Dunedain, right?



hmm. sorry I'm being lazy, but I spent most of the weekend working on my school project (I realized I won't have more chances to be so long on a computer in three weeks, I'm going to two battles and one birthday party ). So...I also realized that drawing every single troop type would take absolutely insane amount of time. People are waiting for the mod and the work is stopped (graphic) waiting for me. So I think it would be best to give the modellers all the stuff made so far so they have something to work on. (I'll do that as soon as I get home which would be Friday) And for the rest...I would like to search the net, scan pictures from books for referrence. It will allow me to draw only these things that are completely unique or require specific style. With elves being pretty normanish and overall medieval-looking that will be easier. I'll still contribute with designs, details and so...I need to have my work (elves and the things I wrote in the first post) done in a month. In a month or so come the exam weeks and I have to pass almost all of them (I have like 11 exams..).

So what do you think?

Hm. Speaking of elves, AW, what sort of swords will they have?
